End result…one curved hem measured, cut, stitched, pressed and ready for a lovely summery outings. ✂️ 👗

I love getting chance to revive clothing that has languished in wardrobes unworn because they didn’t feel right and delivering an item that flatters, fits and makes the wearer smile.

It’s amazing what a small change can do to transform how someone feels.

Work in progress….transforming a hem which was shaped longer st the front and back and shorter at the sides to a nice simple straight hemline and adding a couple of darts to nip in the waist.

Checking levels with a mannequin on the table rather than the floor for a better working height.

Lovely mix of neutral and blue tones in my workroom today for a lovely customer getting their summer wardrobe fitting just right with a tweak here and there.

All about the details…braid laid on hand made braid, topped with dinky bows. More is more in the case of some costumes. Layer textures and colours to stand out from the stage.

I find making bows therapeutic and mindful, epitomising the costume making process. Starting with a rectangle of fabric (or lots) cutting, pinning, stitching in batches of repeated processes, organised piles before finally coming together as the final piece - or in this case dozens of petite bows.

I wonder how many bows I’ve made in my career 🤔 from bow ties to shoe bows, dinky bows, larger bows and the longest so far trailing from waist to floor on a 1930’s style gown 🎀

I love it when a project permits - no demands! - purchasing a new costume reference book that I’ve been wanting to buy for a little while 🥰

And The Tudor Tailor by and Jane Malcom-Davies did not disappoint. It was super helpful when creating a pattern and constructing a pair of paned hose in lovely burgundy and green crushed velvet.

One of the joys of landing slap bang in the middle of central London with all its people, styles and stories was the surprisingly high number of people at Euston station dressed in their summer finery - lots of tailoring, posh frocks, pretty hats and matching jackets in linen, satins and silks.

My first thought was RHS Chelsea flower show…especially as one lady had a lovely selection of usual flowers…but it’s the Kings summer garden party today so that probably explains some of the people suited and booted - what a lovely sunny day for it!

I remember going for a tea break run along the Mall towards Green Park and Hyde Park a good few years ago and stumbling across tons of people in their best outfits worthy of Royal attendance at Buckingham Palace, alongside everyday tourists and workers soaking up the sights. Definitely made for an interesting run!

I wonder how many guests had had their outfits specially made for the occasion or tailored to fit perfectly by seamstresses up and down the country.

Even small alterations can make the difference between liking an outfit and feeling fantastic in it.

Get in touch for alterations in and around the Wirral - for everyday wear, special occasions, weddings and even Royal events if you’ve got the invite!

And homeward…bye London, see you again soon. Spotted lots of posters for some of the shows I’ve worked on in the past that are still going strong - managed to grab a photo of just 3 of them.

I’ve loved my time in various wardrobe departments sometimes all in for a few years and sometimes just dipping in for a couple of weeks or days when it’s all hands on deck for cast change.

I spend so much time making costumes and stitching solo in my studio it’s like stepping into into another, familiar world when I enter backstage. Lovely to see familiar faces and places. Although I really don’t miss finishing work at 11pm…hats off to all those that do especially those with young children - since going freelance, stepping away from shows and having a child I’m definitely more suited to early mornings than late nights!

Wonder how many hours I’ve spent in this building though mostly during ‘Her Majesty’s’ days.
