It’s safe for pregnant women to take paracetamol at any stage of pregnancy. Here’s what the research says about the risk of autism.

Birthrights is deeply concerned at the rise of punitive and criminalising approaches targeting doulas. ⚠️

We are seeing polarising rhetoric focusing on doulas as a risk to be managed while ignoring their vital role in filling the gaps of our maternity system by providing continuity and personalised, supportive and respectful care.

Read more on how this rhetoric contributes to an environment where no one can feel safe 🔗: https://bit.ly/doulaBR

We are calling for a maternity care system where the human rights of ALL women and birthing people are respected and upheld. This includes their right to have their birth partners of choice present, without fear of harassment, persecution or retribution. Learn more: www.bit.ly/SAFEAct_BR

Induction of labour is absolutely the right decision for some women, and absolutely not the right decision for others.

Some women are delighted that they had their labour induced, and some regret this decision for decades.

It is for those reasons that we encourage everyone to get lots of information about induction of labour or any other birth intervention before making a decision.

If you'd like to look at one of my books, then great.

In 'Inducing labour: making informed decisions,’ I talk through the issues in a balanced way and describe the process of induction.

‘In Your Own Time: how western medicine controls the start of labour and why this needs to stop’ goes a bit deeper. I look more into the history and politics and look at the issues for those told they are “at risk.”

Rachel Reed and Henci Goer have fab books on this topic as well.

Like many of my colleagues, my primary concern is that you get good information from a credible source (which does not usually mean the mass media, social media influencers or those without any qualifications or experience) and are able to make the decision that is right for you.

There are sometimes really good reasons for recommending induction of labour.

But sometimes it's offered routinely, without thought for the individual, because of care provider fear, or for convenience.

One size doesn't fit all.

That's a quote from one of my blog posts, and it's based on my book about inducing labour.

The blog post is called 'How to cancel an induction.'

Because if you're happy to have an induction date, that's great.

But too many women are being given dates for induction that they don't want.

You can read the blog post at https://www.sarawickham.com/riffing-ranting-and-raving/how-to-cancel-a-labour-induction/

And there's loads more info on my web site and in my book if you or anyone you know want to get informed before deciding whether or not induction is right for you.

📢 One year on from the UK’s racist riots, we are deeply concerned about how fear, racism, and violence continue to undermine access to safe and respectful care.

During last year’s racist and Islamophobic riots, Black, Brown, asylum-seeking and minoritised women and birthing people faced unsafe and interrupted access to maternity care.

🛑 We’re demanding systemic change, not silence.
Use our FREE template letters you'll find at 🖊️ : www.bit.ly/riotsBR to write to decision-makers and demand action to ensure continued access to safe maternity care for ALL women and birthing people across the UK, at all times — including during emergencies.

📧 Don't forget to CC us at action@birthrights.org.uk or tag us when you’ve sent yours! If you have been impacted by these riots, please share your story with us via the same email — your voice matters and will help to inform our campaigns and advocacy work.

A 2024 study looked at maternal and neonatal outcomes in midwife-attended planned home births versus planned hospital births in Spain.

Researchers analysed data from 3,463 low-risk births between 2016 and 2018, including 2,713 hospital and 750 home births.

They found several differences between the groups, which is often the case in this type of study.

“Women choosing home births typically had higher education levels and were predominantly Spanish. They were 3.43 times more likely to have a spontaneous birth and significantly less likely to undergo instrumental births than those in hospitals.

“Home births were associated with higher utilization of non-pharmacological analgesia and a more pronounced tendency to initiate breastfeeding within the first hour post birth. stronger inclination towards breastfeeding.

“Hospital births, conversely, showed higher use of the lithotomy position and epidural analgesia.” (Alcaraz-Vidal et al 2024).

“There were no significant differences in neonatal outcomes between the two groups.” (Alcaraz-Vidal et al 2024).

The researchers conclude that:

“Home births managed by midwives offered better obstetric and neonatal outcomes for low-risk women than hospital births.

"These results suggest home birth as a safe, viable option that promotes natural birthing processes and reduces medical interventions.

"The study supports the integration of midwife-led home birth into public health policies, affirming its benefits for maternal and neonatal health.” (Alcaraz-Vidal et al 2024).

We have added this to the ever-growing list of studies evidencing the safety of home birth on our home birth information hub.

You can find that, and the link to this study, at https://www.sarawickham.com/research-updates/is_home_birth_safe/

Birth Photography

At the BCC we are now offering birth photography. As a midwife and a Hypnobirthing teacher I understand the importance of the birthing environment - that sacred private space where you and your partner journey together in a flow of Oxytocin to welcome your child into the world. Experiencing the most profound emotions unlike anything you have every felt before – the moment of birth when you meet your baby for the first time.

As a birth photographer my role is to capture those emotions, the raw essence of birth in a quiet unobtrusive way – a pictorial account of this special day for you, your child and your family, how amazing to have this forever record of the most precious time in your life.
