5 Life lessons after a decade of coaching.

Today I had the great honour of reuniting with my good friend- Owner & Founder of Dream Team coaching Chris Davies.

There are many funny stories to be told about our journeys as coaches. I recall when I first started personal training, I was extremely nervous about posting content online. So one day Chris & I decided to host our first ever Facebook Live Q&A together

We sat in his car, attempted to balance a phone and an old school Samsung tablet on the dashboard and spent around 45 mins answering the questions from a number of clients we had called up prior to give us a helping hand 🤣

We both have over a decade of coaching experience & have both changed the lives of 1000s of people around the world.

Although today was plenty of fun & hard training, our meet ups always end up in deep chats about life. I wanted to share 5 key highlights we both discussed:

1️⃣ Learn to face your fears and take risks. Staying in the same place isn't going to get you anywhere positive

2️⃣ Accept the life lessons with love and compassion, don't hold grudges! There's something empowering when you are able to heal traumas and challenges that life throws

3️⃣ Know your truth! As we grow and learn throughout life, our values, beliefs and desires change. It's important to know what you stand for.

4️⃣ Be passionate in what you do! This is self explanatory

5️⃣ Learn to spread positivity: sounds cliche but as coaches, clients come with their own drama and obstacles. It's important to learn how to teach them how to channel positivity in difficult times.

Here's something I don't talk about, and it might surprise you 🫣

When I moved to the UK in 2002, I was heavily bullied and beat up. I was 9 years old & I couldn't speak any English.

I felt like I didn't belong. In my teens I was far from confident and many times ended up being a people pleaser just so I could fit in.

At 14 I got into bodybuilding, it made me feel safe, like I was in control of my own life and it helped me channel a lot of anger I had growing up as a young man, especially after losing my Dad at the age of 15.

I had 2 choices

1. Go off the rails & pick up bad habits

2. Keep focusing on the one thing that allowed me to have full control of my own life.

Obviously, you know I picked the 2nd option. But how's that relevant to you?

Every single one of you reading this have been through something at some point in your life, and those things often have a nock on effect on the decisions you make.

But you too have a choice and it doesn't have to be as complicated as you think. It might mean making changes, adapting to new habits and making difficult decisions. But here's something that helped me, helps my clients and will 100% help you.

1. Stop trying to do it alone.

I had my gym friends who pushed me, my clients have me & you too have me!

There's a reason I have 4 pillars I stand by: Body, Mind, Nutrition & Connection. Because you need all 4 to live a better quality of life and you can have control of at least 1 one of them, to make a positive change to the others.

So to kick June off, I want to challenge you to take 1 step forward towards your health and wellbeing. Pick from one of the following:

1️⃣ Start tracking my food and making healthier choices

2️⃣ Start tracking my steps and challenge yourself weekly to do more

3️⃣ Start journalling to improve mindset

4️⃣ Connect with others who want to make a positive & healthy change.

Can you believe after 12 years of coaching, I still get incredibly nervous when it comes to doing something LIVE 😅.

My 3 pro tips to get in the best shape of your life 👇🏽

Getting in the best shape of your life shouldn't be a daunting experience.

It should be something that:

✅️ Boosts your confidence

✅️ Helps you builder better & healthier habits

✅️ Allows you to feel fitter & healthier

Unfortunately you've over complicated it for far too long & now as summer approaches you’re still nowhere near where you wanna be.

This doesn't mean you shouldn't start now, you should definitely start now!!

Apply these 3 simple things to your day to day to help you get great results

1️⃣ Leave the desk

Get moving to increase calorie expenditure. If you're only doing 2k steps aim for 3k, then 4k and build from there. One step at time is better than trying 5 steps at a time and getting overwhelmed.

2️⃣ Get really strong

Aim for at least 3 resistance/strenght training sessions per week. Really challenge yourself each session!

3️⃣ High & Low

You know the weekends are a problem & they shouldn't be

Have high & lower calories days within your weekly total amount of calories to help you stay on track.

Implement these 3 things with honesty & consistency & you will find yourself getting better, sustainable results.

Is it really that easy? Here is a reality check!

Most people dream of getting in shape but shy away because they think it's too hard. Truth is, it's not about giving up all the foods you love. It's about finding balance within your calorie needs.

Here's a simple approach:

1️⃣ Busy Work Days: These are your opportunity to dial in a bit stricter. Your focus is less on food, so make the most of it by being a tad more disciplined.

2️⃣ Weekends & Client Meetings: Be more flexible! Enjoy your meals without guilt, but aim for moderation.

3️⃣ Prioritise Protein & Veggies: Aim for at least 1.6g of protein per kg of body weight and fill your plate with fruits and veggies. Simple habits, big results.

Now, here's the thing: You don't have to be perfect every day. Aim for consistency, not perfection. Some days will be stricter, others not so much. The key is to find a middle ground, but keep a variety of food groups. It'll make your life easier & you're less likely to binge or go off track

My photos here? 📸 Left (2016): I was prepping for a bodybuilding show, so strictness was key, especially as I got closer to show day. Right (2022): Less strict, just following all the principles I'm sharing with you in this post.

My calorie deficit was a mix of reducing food intake & increasing my step count. I.e. drive less, walk more. Some days more flexible with food & other days a littler stricter. I still had an active social life. It was at this time I started dating my now wife. So plenty of eating out on date nights.

No need to go to extremes unless you're aiming for a competition. It's about finding that sweet spot.
