Sending love to anyone for whom Mother’s Day is not quite so simple.

I hope you find a way to make it special for you. And if not, then to let it pass without too much heartache 💕

If you’re struggling with your mental health and feeling low
If you’re grieving
If you’re unwell, waiting for a diagnosis or going through treatment
If you’re struggling financially
If you’re separated from someone you love or estranged from your family
If you’re lonely
If you’re in an abusive relationship
If you’re going through a painful divorce or separation
If you’re living with the threat of homelessness
If you’re a carer and much as you love them you’re desperate for a break
If you’re struggling to co-parent with a toxic ex partner
If you’re in recovery and find this time of year especially hard
If someone you love is sick or dying
If you’re feeling exhausted & overwhelmed

There are so many reasons that this may not be a happy time of year for you, remember you’re not alone. It’s not just you. Even though the tv, radio and social media might have us convinced that everyone else is having a wonderful time, the reality is that this is a difficult time of year for so many.

We can experience burnout symptoms at any time but the short days and lack of sunlight in the winter months can leave us especially vulnerable.

It’s ok to slow down, rest more and lower your expectations of yourself at this time of year.

Just as in nature, we can use this time to reset and recharge ready for the Spring.

Not everyone feels this way, I know lots of people love the winter for many reasons. But if you’re not one of them, give yourself permission to have a mini hibernation, focussing on the essentials and leaving the rest for when you’re feeling more energised 💛

In homes with alcoholism or other addictions children may grow up with a diffuse sense of identity, low self-esteem, fear and feelings of guilt and shame. This continues into adulthood. They seek validation from others in order to feel secure. Adapt their personalities, beliefs, thoughts and feelings from those around them in an attempt to feel loved and needed. They meet the needs of others, instead of living their own lives and often confuse love with need and feel loved only if they are needed. They have an innate fear of abandonment and remain in abusive relationships as it may give them a sense of being needed. If you feel this relates to you please know you are not alone and you can reach out for support.

This is a question people often ask and there is no right answer.

People come to therapy for all kinds of reasons and at all stages of life.

Some come for urgent support in a crisis, to deal with big life decisions and transitions, to work through trauma or difficult childhood experiences.

Others come simply for a space to reflect, process and talk things over in confidence with a trained professional who will listen and support them without judgement or their own agenda.

The number of sessions you have and how long you spend in therapy depends on many different factors and ultimately
is entirely your call.

A good therapist will always respect your unique situation, the time and financial commitment it takes to come to therapy
and most importantly the fact that you know you best.

Your therapy is yours to own, you get to decide when you’re done or if you need to take a break 💛

It seems so simple and yet for so many of us a true apology feels like the hardest thing.

There are many reasons some people find it hard or even impossible to apologise but it’s often a result of very low self esteem and a fragile sense of self.

Admitting we’re in the wrong or that we’ve made a mistake requires us to be vulnerable.

For many people being vulnerable as an adult feels so threatening that they’ve spent a lifetime building up defences and trying to avoid the pain and risk of ever feeling vulnerable again.

So instead of being able to empathise with the other persons experience and feelings, they instinctively deny them and leap to their own defence without pausing to reflect and consider.

While this is not an excuse, perhaps knowing this can help you to understand why you may never get that apology you feel you deserve from certain people. You may have to accept this and focus instead on your own healing 💛

If being around certain people leaves you feeling not good enough, judged, or even just a little bit flat then it’s time to limit your contact and be more discerning about your free time. Focus your energy on the people who want the best for you, who energise you and leave you feeling nourished instead of drained 💛
