Getting there After 28 years in exile, my partner, Lobsang returned to Tibet in July, and I, eager to visit a land long dreamed about, came too. Getting there is not easy. Visas to China can only be applied for 3 months in advance, and as we applied for family visas, we needed a sponsor. This is a member of the communist party who would be responsible for our actions while in Tibet and possibly lose their job if we misbehaved....

A few years back, I did a five-day hot stone massage course at Jing Advanced Massage in Brighton. The stones are basalt, a volcanic rock, and they have a high iron content, which keeps them warm. Heat is really soothing in a massage, increasing circulation and easing pain. One of Jing's director's, Meg, read from Neruda's Stones of the Sky…...

I normally have these acu-rings in my bag to give to clients if they ever need them. You move them up & down your finger to massage, thus promoting Qi and blood flow. They're paricularly good for arthritis, or numbness and stiffness in the fingers. They also work well with a stimulating oil like the traditional Chinese warming oil woodlock or an arnica oil like Weleda Arnica massage balm.

Tea is one of my guilt-free pleasures. It doesn't make you put on weight, and unlike coffee, it doesn't dehydrate or stop me from sleeping. So I really go for it and buy good quality leaves. I then have a mini tea ceremony, with a small tea pot for multiple brews and a gong dao bei (a small jug) to decant the tea in so it doesn't get too strong....

A patient of mine was clearing out her house and found two embrodered silk pictures her father bought in Hong Kong years ago. She very kindly gave them to me. I was struck by the fine quality of the work and had them framed. They now hang in my hallway. I was curious about the content of the pictures. I was used to seeing nature or deities in Chinese art, but these embroderies had scores of little children running around....

The goji berry tree I planted last year has immediately got to work and is bearing lots of fruit. I picked a handful this morning to eat with my yoghurt. The taste is difficult to describe: they're juicy and sweet, but with a slight bitter/astringent aftertaste that lingers in the mouth. Goji berry is called Gou Qi Zi in Pinyin and is used a lot in Chinese medicine....

I bought a gong fu tea set from Facebook marketplace and started doing tea ceremonies. I bought high quality tea, brewed it several times in a minature clay teapot, then poured it into a tiny ceramic cup. Once of my favourite teas is Chen Pi and pu'er. Chen Pi is mandarin peel. It is commonly used for improve digestion, as it moves Qi or energy in the Stomach and Spleen....
