Meningitis B

There is currently no Men B vaccination program available for adults on the NHS. Children born before 1st May 2015 will not have received this vaccine as part of their childhood immunisations unless accessed privately.

Since 2015 the Men B vaccine has been routinely offered to all babies as part of the NHS childhood immunisation schedule, with doses being given at 8weeks, 12weeks and one year.

The Men ACWY vaccine, which increases your protection against MenC and helps to protect you against three other meningococcal groups (A, W and Y), is a single dose given at school aged 13-14 (year 9) and can be given by the surgery on the NHS upto the age of 25 if it has been missed. A booster dose is not needed.

Be aware of the symptoms of Meningitis. The symptoms can appear in any order. Some may not appear at all.

You should get medical advice as soon as possible if you’re concerned that you or your child could have meningitis.
📞Phone 999 for an ambulance or go to your nearest A&E department immediately if you think you or your child might be seriously ill.
📞Phone 111 for advice if you’re not sure if it’s anything serious or you think you may have been exposed to someone with meningitis.

March is Brain Tumour awareness month.

A brain tumour is an abnormal growth of cells within the brain or skull, which can be cancerous (malignant) or non-cancerous (benign).

A brain tumour can cause headaches but it is unusual for this to be the only symptom. Other symptoms can include feeling sick, having seizures, problems with mobility, speech and vision and changes in personality and behaviour.
Other conditions may cause similar symptoms. But if you have any symptoms, it is important to get them checked by your GP.

This month is an opportunity to raise awareness about what a brain tumour is, what are the symptoms, and how to seek help. There are many charities and organisations working to raise awareness, research and gain support, including cancer research and Macmillan.

If you would like some more information about the symptoms of a brain tumour, or you would like to take part and raise awareness, you can use the links below:

Protected Time for Learning - Surgery Closure

Morland House Surgery will be closing for the afternoon on Wednesday 4th March from 1pm for valuable staff training and development. We will reopen as normal from Thursday 5th March at 8am.

Protected Time for Learning (PTL) allows all our staff time to be released for educational sessions such as basic life support, clinical management updates, development of new services, customer care and mandatory training.

If you call the surgery during a PTL afternoon you will receive a recorded message giving you advice on who to call should you need the services of a GP.

We apologise for any inconvenience that this causes for patients but we hope that you understand that this is the most efficient and cost effective way of ensuring that our staff receive all the necessary training that they require.

March is Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month.

Ovarian cancer is a disease that can disrupt the normal function of the ovaries. If it’s left unchecked, it can affect other parts of the body too.

During the month of March, Ovarian Cancer Action - alongside other UK gynae charities - put the spotlight on ovarian cancer and ask their supporters to help them raise awareness of ovarian cancer symptoms, statistics and stories.

Today is the start of Prostate Cancer Awareness Month.

It’s important to know the signs and symptoms – especially as risk increases with age. Most cases develop in men aged 50 or older and prostate cancer is more common in Black men.

Prostate cancer often develops slowly, so there may be no symptoms for many years.

Early diagnosis and treatment can save lives. Contact your GP if you notice any changes in your body or something doesn’t feel right.

If you have asthma, the cold weather can make your symptoms worse and increase your risk of becoming unwell.

Cold air can cause your airways to narrow, increasing the amount of mucus you produce and making it hard to breathe.
Cold, dry air can also irritate your airways and make symptoms like wheezing, coughing and breathlessness worse.
