Look out this very evening for this very guitar. Come along to see INNAFIELD at The Kings Arms Hotel at the final day of Kingstock 25! INNAFIELD will be closing out the whole weekend with their final headline slot from 6:30pm. It’s been this afternoon for a quick pre-gig service. As ever, fitting brilliant Newtone Strings 11-47 gauge.
Fender - looking for a new band to get behind? Look no further than Innafield!

And finally for this week, here’s a beautiful Fender Ultra Telecaster. It came for a check over, being a fairly new guitar. And what a guitar! Look at that single binding, and check out the comfort carves on the back! The customer had a bit of an issue with a slight buzz and wanted a second opinion and to check the setup. I’ve measured everything, especially the first fret and nut depth (the customer’s complaint was the guitar sounded like it was a sitar on playing the open top E). It all checked out ok, but needed a little 1/4 turn on the truss rod. I think you’ll agree, this is another cracker that’s been this week!

If you’re a regular at The Kings Arms Hotel you may well recognise this guitar. It belongs to one of Wilmslow’s hardest working, busiest guitar players. Jon is a member of local bands , as well as being the driving force behind the monthly Blues and Roots music night at the Kings Arms, and a regular at Open Mic night! His bands play all over the North West as well!!
This guitar is a very, very special one. You probably haven’t seen one of these before! It’s a St Blues, made in Nashville USA, where Jon and his family have visited many times. It’s a Les Paul outline, with Telecaster controls, body carves like a strat, a string through hardtail 6 saddle bridge, an HSS pickup configuration and a bolt on maple neck with a dark rosewood fingerboard. The beautifully figured Ash body shows its grain through a lovely, glossy, transparent crimson finish, which is set off by the binding. What a corker! Shame it’s the wrong way round for me to play!
It came on for its first ever service and setup, and a report of noisy volume and tone pots. No surprise really when you consider how much this guitar gets played! Any gigging guitar will
Suffer the same - basically, it’s sweat from the fingers that gets into the potentiometer. An easy fix with some contact cleaner. It’s also had a full fret check, polish, relief adjustment (truss rod), fret board clean and oil and a body polish! Good to go. Keep an eye out for it at a venue near you!

Who’s a lucky boy then? Me! I’m always grateful to my customers, old and new, for bringing their guitars to the door of Cygnus Towers and trusting me to hand their pride and joy back set up just how they want it. This lovely O X1 acoustic is the first guitar from a new customer who has a bit of a collection. This one needed the action lowering, so I’ve shaved down the bridge saddle to bring it into a much more comfortable feel. It’s also had a full service, health check, fret level check, frets polished, fingerboard cleaned and a new set of the customer’s Martin strings. The customer was instantly impressed with the new feel of the guitar. Hopefully this will be the first of many for him!

And finally for now, this Eastman Guitars AC222 CE GB was in a little while ago for a setup. I shaved the bridge to lower the action, adjusted the truss rod to set the neck relief, polished the frets, oiled the fret board and just sat back and looked at it. Eastman are probably the best kept secret in the guitar world. Hand made by luthiers in China, quality checked in Europe. The equivalent Martin or Taylor would set you back 4 figures. These sell new for £899! Look at the specs. All solid wood, tortoiseshell binding. Lovely. The owner is looking to sell, so if you’re interested let me know. It’s going for a lot less than the RRP!!

Finally getting time to catch up on posts. Here’s a lovely Taylor Guitars acoustic that came in for a setup. It belongs to a busy gigging musician who is a regular performer at , Wilmslow. It’s had an issue snapping a string at the bridge. I’ve smoothed out a couple of burrs on the bridge saddle, polished the frets (checked for level, reseated frets 2 and 4), cleaned and oiled the fret board and checked the neck relief. As soon as the customer picked it up he could feel the difference!

Well, here’s an absolute corker recently. A by Fender Telecaster Custom. This one belongs to a long time customer who likes to buy and sell guitars (don’t we all?). His latest is this and it’s just been on for a service and setup, with his choice of strings. There is something about a double blind tele, isn’t there? I’ll say it again, these Sqiers are soooooo good for the money. Why look elsewhere?
Lots more to come from me - from Fender electrics to acoustics next!

It’s been a week for Fender guitars this week! Here’s a different take on the classic . It’s a rather nice HH telecaster in what I believe to be Blue. It’s very close to Gibson guitars’ Pelham Blue.
This belongs to a young man who’s just completed his GCSEs and is looking forward to a summer of playing. It’s been in his hands (barely out of his hands to be honest!) for the last three years. A much loved guitar, as it should be. It came to me for a service and setup. One of the neck pickup screws had dropped into the pickup cavity - easy fix! The main issue was the top E string ‘choking’ when bending. This can be down to the fretboard radius, but as this is a more modern Tele, it’s got a 9.5” radius board so not the case. It’s been taken care of with the service, adjusting the action and neck relief. It’s had all the usual Cygnus Guitars service checks, a new set of Newtone Strings and is back in his hands.

‘Strat’s the way, aha, aha, I like it!’ Here’s the latest post. A guitar belonging to a young man who has just finished his GCSEs and is looking forward to a summer of playing his guitar. The guitar in question, a , had other ideas! The nut came off the jack plug which meant he couldn’t plug it in. His dad brought it to me, and asked for my help. It was clear that it’s very well played…and in need of a good service. It’s had the new nut, and I’ve also strengthened the solder joints on the jack socket. It’s had a full fretboard health check, frets polished so they’re nice and smooth. A new set of Newtone Strings 10-52 strings, nut l**e, full action and intonation setup and all the electrics cleaned. More Fender guitars to follow. It’s looking like a busy time ahead!!

For about a year now I’ve been using my Fender as my main gigging guitar. It resides in my lounge and has become my go-to ‘noodling’ and home practice guitar as well. If you haven’t tried one of these, I’d 100% recommend you do. Mine is the Made in Mexico version. The USA version has a wider range of tones available and has more expensive wood. Fender now also do a standard version, so there really is something for everyone. Anyway, mine just needed a service so as I’ve not posted for a while I thought I’d share this with you.
Hope you’re all well. Thanks as always for following and to my customers for your support.

Long time readers may well recognise this SQUIER GUITARS by FENDER Jazz Bass. It’s a real beauty in gloss black. This first time I saw it, I was asked to wire up a faulty pickup. It came to me last time for a pretty complex wiring circuit, with stacked tone and volume and a series/parallel switch. After that, I replaced the pickups. The customer has decided to replace that with a single stacked volume for both pickups, keeping the series parallel switch and adding a TBX Tone Boost control.
Here’s what Fender has to say…

The Treble Bass Expander (TBX) is a stacked and detented 250K/1Meg potentiometer that expands your tonal palette. It functions as a standard tone control from 1 to 5, after which it decreases resistance, sending more bass, treble, presence and output to your amp. Mounting hardware and installation instructions included.

The customer has PROMISED me this is the last mod for this bass….

Happy new string day! Wait, is that just me? Always good to get a new batch of Newtone Strings . Ready for your guitar!
Newtone are a small company based in Matlock, Derbyshire making all their strings by hand. I’ve been using these for about 4 years now and they are my go-to, replacing over 40 years with D’Addario. No offence to them, they do make excellent strings. It’s just there’s something about Newtone Strings that makes them better in my opinion.
Contact me if you need some new strings on your guitar. I fit these as standard with a full service.
