💙 International Nurses Day 💙

As we wrap up a week of celebrations across our incredible nursing teams, we’re proud to shine a spotlight on some of the recent achievements within our Outpatients department at The Wilmslow Hospital.

✨ This week marks an exciting milestone as we treat our first patient for an iron infusion
✨ We’re also expanding our services to include cystoscopy, adding to our growing range of outpatient procedures

A special congratulations to our Matron, Lisa Jane Booth, pictured at the centre, who has recently celebrated an amazing 10-year anniversary at The Wilmslow Hospital 👏

Celebrating with Lisa are a few members of the wider Outpatients nursing team. We’re so grateful for all your hard work, expertise, and compassion, which help to continually improve our Outpatients experience.

This week we’re supporting Deaf Awareness Week.

It’s an opportunity to recognise the experiences of people who are deaf or have hearing loss, and the barriers they face every day.

To mark the week, we challenged some of our hospital staff to learn a little British Sign Language (BSL).

Hearing loss can be a hidden disability, and many people aren’t sure how best to offer support. In the UK, 1 in 6 people are affected by some level of hearing loss, and small adjustments can make communication much easier.

If you’re visiting the hospital and you’re deaf or have hearing loss?
✔️ Please tell a member of staff.
✔️ We can arrange a BSL interpreter.
✔️ We can make reasonable adjustments for your communication needs.

We would like to thank Richard Jones and Bec Ashton at Warrington & District Society for Deaf People for their assistance with the signing.

Well done to our staff members - Sarah Dempsey, Matt Wareing, Punam Modgil, and Paula Winston-Keating, thank you for your time and enthusiasm, you all did brilliantly. 👏

We’ve officially kicked off our National Nurses Week celebrations at The Wilmslow Hospital 🎉

Throughout the week, we’re enjoying a variety of activities with our incredible nursing teams, those who go above and beyond every single day to ensure our patients receive care rooted in compassion, kindness, and excellence.

Some of our team have stepped back in time, dressing up as Florence Nightingale, one of the most influential figures in nursing, who helped transform the nursing profession in the 19th century.

We’re so proud to work alongside such outstanding nurses across our Cheshire facilities. Their dedication, empathy, and commitment are nothing short of inspirational.

💌 Join us in showing your appreciation
Today is the perfect opportunity to say thank you.

IBS and IBD are often confused but they are two very different conditions.

In this reel, Mr Paul Sutton, Consultant General and Colorectal Surgeon at The Wilmslow Hospital, explains why understanding the difference matters.

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) involves inflammation that can damage the bowel and may require specific medical therapy and sometimes surgery.

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), on the other hand, affects how the bowel functions. The bowel itself is healthy, but symptoms can be driven by a complex interplay of diet, stress, sleep, exercise and mental wellbeing.

Because symptoms can overlap, investigations such as blood tests, stool markers and colonoscopy may be needed to establish the correct diagnosis and ensure the right treatment pathway.

If you’re experiencing persistent bowel symptoms, seeking expert advice can help you get clarity and the appropriate care.

🌍 Celebrating Earth Day at The Wilmslow Hospital 🌍

We’re committed to reducing our environmental impact, and over the past few years we’ve introduced a range of sustainability initiatives designed to help us operate in a more responsible, climate‑conscious way.

One of the biggest changes we've made is introducing a portable nitrous oxide manifold into our operating theatres.

🌍 What is nitrous oxide?
Nitrous oxide is a potent greenhouse gas and a significant ozone depleting substance. It has almost 300 times the global warming impact of CO₂.

🌍 Why is it used in healthcare?
Nitrous oxide has been used as a surgical anaesthetic for many years, however advances in anaesthetic agents mean its use has declined in recent years. Despite this, nitrous oxide continues to be piped into every theatre and anaesthetic room from a central manifold. However, at most hospitals, the majority of purchased nitrous oxide is lost through leaks before it ever reaches a patient.

🌍 What have we changed at The Wilmslow Hospital?
We successfully decommissioned our nitrous oxide manifold and introduced a portable nitrous manifold. We have prevented nitrous leaking across the estate by bringing cylinders directly into the theatre department at the point of use.

🌍 What does this mean for the environment?
This change typically reduces purchased nitrous oxide volumes by 75–98%. Last year, we purchased 90,000 L of nitrous oxide - equivalent to 50 tonnes of CO₂e. However, with a conservative projection of purchasing 8,000 L this year, the site will save approximately 45.6 tonnes of CO₂e.

🌟 This is a major win for the planet and for The Wilmslow Hospital!
