If you have developed a minor pain or injury from overloading in the gym, a simple bit of advice is to DELOAD then RELOAD.

Sore knees after a squat PB attempt?

1. Finish the session with some pain-free exercise (light cardio or upper body workout).

2. Relative rest for 1-2 weeks until the pain starts to ease off.

3. Once the pain has gone, start gradually reloading into the aggravating exercise.

4. Get that squat PB!!

The best thing you can do to stay healthy is MOVEMENT 🏃🚶🏋️🚴🤸‍♀️🏊‍♀️

Movement is an important part of staying healthy and has numerous benefits, and it doesn't have to be intense exercise!

Regular physical activity can help to reduce stress, improve mood, boost energy levels, and maintain a healthy weight. It can also help to reduce the risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, and some forms of cancer. Additionally, movement can help to increase flexibility, improve balance and coordination, strengthen muscles and bones, reduce pain and inflammation, and improve overall physical and mental well-being.

So make sure to get up and get moving! 💃

"I'm in pain. Why should I get stronger?"

1. Getting stronger can offload painful joints.

2. Getting stronger can increase pain tolerance.

3. Getting stronger improves function.

4. Getting stronger has no negative side effects!

Why shouldn't you get stronger?

Knee ligament injuries (also known as knee sprains or “twisting the knee”) are common injuries that can occur in day-to-day activities and sports. They are caused by over rotation or translation between the femur and the tibia from excessive force, such as through direct impact from a bad tackle or sudden change in direction. This puts too much stress on the ligament causing it to become over-stretched or torn resulting in pain, weakness, loss of movement and sometimes instability of the joint.

Swelling management

Swelling needs to be controlled in the acute and sub-acute phases of rehab. Most important is compression and elevation. Compression is best done with a brace you can tighten below the knee and loosen above the knee, this helps to redirect flow of excess fluid back into circulation, rather than pooling in the joint. Elevation above the heart helps this process via gravity.

Phase 1: Maintain and Lengthen

During the early phases of rehab, it is important to maintain strength and range of movement (ROM) whilst avoiding re-injury and swelling (an art not a science!). This is usually done using pain-free movement or isometric exercises. Manual therapy techniques can also be used in this phase to help with ROM and pain.

Phase 2: Move and Strengthen

After the swelling and pain have significantly reduced, it’s time to phase in normal movement of the joint. The aim is to increase the strength of the muscles surrounding the knee joint using compound exercises and progressively increasing load tolerance.

Phase 3: Power and Return to play

The fun bit! In this stage of rehab the ligament is tested with tougher exercises, such as plyometrics, with the aim of increasing power in the muscles and stability in the joint. The goal of this phase is to gradually phase in the activity that caused the injury.

*This is a generalised example of a rehab plan for a knee ligament injury. Realistically, rehab can vary massively between different injuries, and many different factors affect recovery.
