Good training sesh this morning at the UK Soo Bahk Do Seminar in Wokingham 🥋🇬🇧

Proud to have some of my students attend and heard great feedback about them!

Decided to take a photo to send to the rest of Team DX, and whilst making the selfie, a ninja captured the moment 😅

It makes a better photo than my actual attempt 😁

Being at the Carrières des Lumières today was inspiring. It presented a feeling of what it could have been like within the buildings of ancient history.

The architecture and paintings have stories that reveal to those who seek it.

In many ways, this is the same for traditional martial arts, with its techniques and hyungs/ katas.

Let's stay curious to find out more 🥋

Travel anywhere in Manchester, and you'll experience something new.

Visit the same location for a different purpose, and suddenly, the place that you are familiar with becomes a little unfamiliar.

This piece marks the first time to connect Soo Bahk Do with the surrounding architecture. I start to see the environment differently with the support and talent of my photographer friend.

Martial arts and photography are both artistic. This is an example of what we can do when both are applied.

You can make a good friend for life during the martial arts journey 🥋

Someone you can talk about martial arts with, but also many other topics. Someone you can learn from, laugh with, relax, and generally feel a special energy when together.

It was special for me to meet up with Shannon today after many months. Someone I hugely respect and love spending time with. A friend from training together many years ago.

We decided to share our Sunday to experiment with photography at a place where I always find creative energy: Media City UK.

Then, at one moment, we captured this Soo Bahk Do photo together to mark the foundation to friendship 📸

This is Fontaine Moussue, one of the fountains down the Mirabeau in Aix-en-Provence, France. It was made in 1666.

It's a striking fountain because of the unusual design.

To me, the Fontaine Moussue gives the impression of beauty and stability.

I connect this view with a reverse punch in front stance from Soo Bahk Do 🥋

Front stance is a stable position, and when the hip connects with the breath for a reverse punch, I admire the technique.

Fun fact : facing me were tourists with their guide. Many were watching me, the weird person, making this piece. I forgot my tripod also, so had to improvise with my bag...which a van narrowly missed 😅

Ah...so much drama behind the scenes!

Two options: the easy path or the challenging path to the lake along the Saint Victoire ⛰️ 🇫🇷

Comfort wanted easy, but to grow, I went with the challenge.

The terrain tested the mind and body - especially for someone who did not grow up familiar with such exploration activities.

Balance and focus were key, but to also breathe and allow the body to relax, even when it wanted to remain tense.

Towards reaching the lake after 1 hour, the path needed the steepest descent I've ever experienced.

I tried and came 90% close to the final...but I had to stop after several attempts.

It was beyond my current capabilities.

Although very disappointed, I had tried a lot but just could not make the end. And so, we walked back up and around to an easier route to reach the destination. However, in a way, I was also proud to have made it that far and control better my reactions to the challenges faced in this path.

On the way after my initial defeat, I captured this photo to connect with Soo Bahk Do. A pose that requires balance, flexibility and confidence.

It signals to me that all experiences teach you something, so stay determined.

Opening the Great Gate at Marseille 🇫🇷

I've taken a personal project to explore new places and experiences - and connect these with what it means to me as a Soo Bahk Do martial artist 🥋

Upon leaving Marseille today, I found the connection of the technique "Jang Kap Kwon Kong Kyuk" at the stairs that lead to this amazing city.

From this city, I've learnt to travel by myself and explore things to begin to see the world differently. Also, because of this city, I have the gateway to Aix, which I consider a key place for a wellness boost.

It comes from making that first step mentally. A result of traits honed through martial arts.

How to pose for a holiday photo: the martial arts way!

📸 St. Tropez, France.

---

During this visit, I've achieved a few 'first experiences' in life.

It's important to remember that things don't always happen (or change) suddenly for us. It often takes a slow build up of the same thought and a trigger circumstance.

Once done, however, it opens up more mindset freedom when thinking about the choices one makes in a lifetime.

Here's to choosing to make the most with what we have, rather than any fear that may stop us.

Taken a few days ago, I wanted to show an 'example' photo for my martial arts students, to encourage them to participate in a competition that I've organised.

There's one thing to train in the dojang and another to train at any time at any place - a reason why Beyond the Dojang was created.

It takes courage to make that step to train in public.

It also takes focus and the ability to block out all possible distractions to just immerse yourself into the training experience.

This location was very busy: with football, picnics, sunbathers and others around.

However, you find a spot that's suitable and just begin.

Each training experience this way hones the mind in a special way, along with the body.

It builds who you are as a practitioner.

At different points of the martial arts journey, we face thoughts and feelings that we've faced before at white belt.

Such as : uncertainty, doubt and maybe a little overwhelm.

It's most evident when beginning again to learn new material that we're reminded to embrace the beginner's mind.

This is the same mindset of every white belt who takes the courage to reach their first belt promotion.

We just need to start. And then, put in the reps to see the outcome for personal and physical growth.

And here's the side kick contribution from our Instructor, Sabrina, for International Women's Day.

She missed the kick yesterday because she was the camera person for DX. Today, she made it after the seminar.

If you want to kick like us, train with us! 😁🥋💪

My story

Beyond the Dojang was created by Sabrina Mistry, a UK & Ireland Moo Duk Kwan practitioner in the Art of Soo Bahk Do. I wanted to give back to the martial art, and to support and inspire as many practitioners as possible on their journey to unlock their potential. Whilst my experiences are largely related to Soo Bahk Do, much of my content is transferrable for those training in other martial arts. Hopefully, there is some value for all.

By nature, I love reading and learning new things, and I’m also a deep thinker. I think it’s fair to say that I have a variety of interests and experiences. These include: art and animation, self-development, health and fitness, video games, and reading business and leadership books. I apply this mixed bag of interests at Beyond the Dojang to offer original content that I merge with martial arts, and also content that reflects me. I will never deviate to just post something for the sake of it.

Over the years as a practitioner, I’ve spent time trying to learn more about the martial art and the martial arts life in general. This is because:

It’s actually incredible when I think about it, how so many people came before us and also those presently there shape who we are, our experiences, and what a martial art represents. There came a point, whilst I enjoyed learning what I found, that I felt the content available was somewhat limited. I wanted to engage in deeper thinking about my purpose in the martial art and also in life (which arguably is the same thing). Also, I wanted more things out there to resonate with the ‘average person’. For example, I didn’t start exercising until I was 18 and was really unfit, I’m not that confident but trying to work on it, and I don’t know everything but I’m eager to learn.
