Getting out of overdrive. When life events strike out of the blue and face us with immediate stress theses are called acute stresses. This might be being fired, going through a divorce or bad break-up, having a baby, or being diagnosed with a potentially serious disorder but it might also be attending an interview or performance. But when acute stress is coupled with a chronic overload of day-to-day stresses such as commuting, long hours at work, and not enough down time our bodies can go into what we call sympathetic overdrive – or chronic stress
The sympathetic nervous system - also known as our fight-flight-freeze response once triggered is difficult to override but it is necessary for our survival – e.g., responding at lighting speed when you see your child step into oncoming traffic.
But sometimes our bodies go into sympathetic overdrive unnecessarily -
