🌼“Flowers don’t compare themselves to each other, they just go ahead and bloom ”

I was reminded of this quote this week (I don’t know where it originates from) and fell in love with it again.

Even in the harshest environment a flower will find a way. When it finds itself in the “wrong” place, or it gets trampled or blown or overlooked, it will still take its place and bloom.

How perfect.

So, what if we were to see ourselves as flowers, commanding space and adding beauty to the (often terrible) world around us?

What if our particular blooming was what was needed to complete the garden?

What difference could we make?

Share this with your favourite flowers.

What small things have made you smile so far this week?

Sometimes we have to search hard for them and sometimes they’re just there, waiting for you to notice and respond, like this little geezer smiling at me on the tram.

Notice what difference it makes to how you respond to your immediate surroundings, when you spot something that makes you smile.

How far could those ripples travel?

The noticeable change in daylight at this time of year always fills my soul with joy and hope and even a little bit of excitement.

3:30pm on the 9th of January and we can already feel the lengthening of the day.

It helps that the sun is shining and even though it’s cold outside, it at least looks warmer, brighter - the sky seems wider, more expansive , like there’s something, at least something, to be grateful and hopeful for.

What glimmers are you noticing or seeking out today?
What difference does that make?

What are you choosing to take a chance with this week?

What difference could it make to just start now, right now - even though you don’t even know where the ducks are, let alone having them in a row?

What if you are braver than your fears are trying to dictate?

What’s the best that happen?

Dark Days

Even on the darkest of days we can find, if we search, a little glimmer of something that keeps us going. A tiny little spark of joy, a fleeting moment of calm, a glance of appreciation, a thank you, a small act of kindness, a smile from a stranger, distant laughter, a dash of sunshine.

When we learn to search for those moments and sit with them even for a minute, we are reconnecting with our reason for living.

I’ve had many conversations in this room, just this week alone, with people who have forgotten where to look for their reasons to live and I’m glad to say, that we’ve found them. We may have many more difficult days ahead and we now know where to find those most helpful moments.

Those little glimmers.

Please, if things are dark for you right now, take some time to search for those precious little things that keep you going.

And please, even if you’re not ok, take a moment and smile or say hello to a stranger, let someone out in traffic, pause to say a proper thank you - you may never know whose life you are saving or you may discover that it’s yours.

I was pondering on what makes happy people happy today, and remembered this from someone I was talking with a while ago.

“It’s like you turned a key in my head and it allowed me to be happy”

I’d simply asked “what’s been better since we last spoke?”

A strange question, maybe, to ask someone faced with having to make life changing decisions that they didn’t want to make. Decisions in reaction to things that were seemingly out of their control.

So here’s a little reflection for you, if you wish.

Supposing, despite everything, you just allowed yourself to be happier…

☀️What would you notice yourself doing differently?

☀️Who would be pleased to notice those differences?

☀️What impact might your being happier have on them?

Don’t worry, be happy.

The dandelion

Often maligned, regarded as a nuisance, something to get rid of or simply overlooked.

But did you know…

The humble dandelion has historically been used in folk medicine for helping with digestive and inflammation issues, and a quick search will bring up dandelion recipes alongside anecdotal evidence and research studies of its medicinal properties and efficacy. There are even small but promising studies of the potential benefits of dandelion extract in the treatment of certain cancers, and their carefully washed leaves and flowers are a tasty, heathy addition to salads. Honest!

Popping out early in spring to sustain the bees before other flowers are brave enough, reappearing quickly after bad weather and resiliently holding on wherever there’s a crack in the pavement, dandelions really are just little drops of joy.

Kids, and the adults that teach them, enjoy the simple pleasure of the dandelion clock - spreading more drops of joy around as they watch the seeds floating away in the breeze.

The humble but mighty dandelion. They’re everywhere.

🌼What little drops of joy are you overlooking in your life?
🌼What might you discover if you stopped for a moment and considered their presence?
🌼What difference would that make?

Thinking long and slow - doing less, being more.

Whenever we step out of the door we are stepping into a world of structures, procedures, rules and regulations, and we probably don’t even think about them most of the time - they just become second nature. Societal expectations that we just do.

So when you have time to yourself, even if it’s limited, how do you create intentional space?
What difference does it make when you do?

Who haven’t you spoken to in a while?

Who is someone who would appreciate hearing your voice and you theirs?

Someone you could call, right now, even if it meant leaving a voicemail to begin with.

Supposing you do that, right now, what difference might it make to their day and to yours?

Keeping open communication with those who are important to us is one of the most important things we can do for a happier life. Communicate when you need chocolate and hugs and communicate when you just want to say hello and share what’s been good.

Helping teams to develop and recognise their emotional resilience through Solution Focused Strength Based Workshops, is another of my favourite things to do,and yesterday, I had the privilege of spending time at All Saints Action Network Ltd doing just that with the Nursery team.

A dedicated and inspiring group of early years practitioners with oodles of passion for their work. They are a such a beneficial asset to their community and each team member an absolute gem.

Thank you for having me again All Saints Day Nursery, and for inspiring me with your camaraderie and your uplifting stories of compassion in the community.

Resolutions or resolute?

Either way, Jessica Boehman’s illustration is a fair representation of how I’m launching into the New Year.

I tend to rediscover my natural rhythm and verve as the days become noticeably lighter - around mid January. This time is reserved for restoring, taking stock, laying plans and preparing for what’s to come.

How about you - do you arrive with alacrity or amble on in?

What are you leaving behind and what are you taking with you?

Whatever I’m doing, if it aligns with my principles of simplicity and joy and allows me to share some of that stuff around, then all is as good as it can be.

Happy New Year.
