The name of this lovely stone comes from the Greek word “amethyein,” meaning “not drunk.” The Greeks wore it as protection against magic, evil thoughts, homesickness and drunkenness… wine was served in vessels made of amethyst for just this reason!

Amethyst is used to alleviate migraines by placing a cross section or geode in a room; it is also said to improve concentration. This might be why Buddhist monks use it aid in meditation. Amethyst is also thought to bring about a peaceful sleep by preventing nightmares as it has a soothing and relaxing effect. The stone is also use to treat swelling, insect bites and acne. Washing your face with amethyst water is said to ensure soft skin. Use amethyst if you need to increase your level of confidence.

It is a stone that hasn’t lost its popularity in over 2,000 years. Being a very spiritual stone, with no negative energy, I consider this beautiful crystal a welcome addition to any witch’s cupboard! Magickally, it is said to not only attract justice, but also protects against thievery. It is a stone that promotes courage, happiness, peace and love. Amethyst can heighten inner energies and is considered a stone of wisdom. When exchanged between two people in a committed relationship, amethyst can strengthen the bond between them.
