😔Worried about your child’s mental health? 💡Try this…

3 Questions to ask if your child feels overwhelmed:

1) Ask: How does your body and mind feel right now? (they might say: tight, busy, confused etc)

Respond: “That sounds hard…it’s normal to feel that way, thanks for sharing. Would you like to talk about ways to feel better?”

If they say ‘no’ say “No, problem, I’m here if you want to talk”.

If they say ‘yes’ try this…

2) Ask: Do you fancy doing some movement to see if this helps? Try jumping on the spot, punching the air or walking briskly. (This can regulate the nervous system and send calming signals to the brain).

3) Ask: If your feelings were a colour or a shape what would they look like? (Have some paper/pens nearby in case they want to draw them and explore further.
This also serves as a temporary distraction from their overwhelm in the moment).

If your child won’t open up and talk…and you’re worried about them…😔here’s my advice as a psychotherapist…

💡 Try to chat one on one…or listen alongside them (while walking, eating or driving).
Less eye contact can often help 👀and a quiet chat at their pace, with no direct questioning…

As a therapist, I often meet people who’ve avoided counselling because it felt like an “interview.”
Some of my younger clients welcome listening to music, colouring or stroking my dog in their first session while they share what they are comfortable to about their interests...this seems to build trust.👂

💡My CORE Mental Health PSHE Curriculum and aligned parent/carer wellbeing programme: www.coremhcurriculum.co.uk builds on insights like that.

🌍💚 World Mental Health Day 💚🌍 The world is going through a tough time right now and even if you're not directly affected by events, it can still feel like a lot to cope with.

The image with this post shares some great services for children's mental health.

🌍💚 World Mental Health Day 💚🌍

Mental health struggles are often invisible and hidden behind the reply “I’m fine” if someone asks you how you are…
✨ Today, make a difference in a simple way:

Ask someone “How are you?” ×2 🫶

The second time can be the moment they truly open up. 🫂💬

What keeps you awake?

For me, it’s thoughts about the rising rates of self-harm and su***de in young people 😔💭

📱✨ I haven’t posted for a while, not because I’ve lost interest, but because I’ve been working on something that matters deeply to me…my Wellbeing Home Programme (for children aged 4-11)…which I’m now ready to launch.

It’s an online, engaging programme containing weekly 30 minute activities so children can learn practical mental health strategies early at home to support their wellbeing for years to come. 💚📚

With so many children struggling right now, I wanted to create something that families can use at home to make a real difference. 🌱

👉 Link in the comments if you’d like to find out more about how to get involved in my pilot.

We’re not getting it right…we all know that the NHS services are overwhelmed ⚠️🏥 and I think we urgently need to start earlier in a child’s life…by normalising practical wellbeing strategies to help them deal with anxiety, loss, social media pressures, low self-esteem, poor body image, difficult friendships and much more🌱💬

No child should have to wait until crisis to get help 💛

I’d love to hear from you: What keeps you awake at night? 💤💭

Hi I'm Suze, a psychotherapist.

Does anyone relate to this image?

If you're feeling overwhelmed...

❤️‍🩹stop,
❣️breathe,
💓delegate anything (if possible),
💟drop anything that comes from your need for perfectionism,
💞prioritise and tackle each task one at a time...
💝rewarding yourself when something is accomplished.

I’m Suze, a psychotherapist.

I’m wondering if people feel stigma when they seek counselling.

I love what Juan Pablo Galavis, an American football player and reality show star, says about the power of therapy:

"There’s a stigma on the word therapy. People relate it to big problems. That’s something we have to change. Going to therapy can be very healthy. It can change how you see things and treat others.”

Do you agree?

I’m Suze, a psychotherapist. I want to break down the stigma of seeking therapy…

Consider bravely taking a step towards exploring your inner world, rather than focusing more on external things and outer appearances.

Many of the investments we make often relate more to our physical health, than our mental health…
* healthy food/fruit/veg?
* Gym membership?
* Vitamins?
* Protein powder?
* Exercise?

Consider investing in one thing that you know will support your mental health in 2024…
Therapy?
Mindfulness?
Learning to say no when you need to?
Sharing honestly about how you are really feeling with people around you?
