😔Worried about your child’s mental health? 💡Try this…
3 Questions to ask if your child feels overwhelmed:
1) Ask: How does your body and mind feel right now? (they might say: tight, busy, confused etc)
Respond: “That sounds hard…it’s normal to feel that way, thanks for sharing. Would you like to talk about ways to feel better?”
If they say ‘no’ say “No, problem, I’m here if you want to talk”.
If they say ‘yes’ try this…
2) Ask: Do you fancy doing some movement to see if this helps? Try jumping on the spot, punching the air or walking briskly. (This can regulate the nervous system and send calming signals to the brain).
3) Ask: If your feelings were a colour or a shape what would they look like? (Have some paper/pens nearby in case they want to draw them and explore further.
This also serves as a temporary distraction from their overwhelm in the moment).
