It was a bit of a race to Rooted Coffee Company yesterday for coffee and cake. We are always sure of a warm welcome. Good exercise, fresh air and great refreshment.

'What do I say to someone with dementia in residential care who wants to go home?'

It's not uncommon for a person with dementia to say they want to go home. This can be caused by time shifting or general confusion, which can be distressing for everyone.

It can be difficult to know what to say or how to handle this situation to help minimise the person’s distress as much as possible.

Here are five things to remember when someone with dementia in care is asking to go home:

1. Avoid arguing about whether they are already ‘home'. When a person with dementia asks to go home it often refers to the sense of ‘home’ rather than the place itself.

2. Reassure them of their safety. They could be living somewhere different from where they have lived before and need to know they are cared for.

3. Establish whether or not they are feeling unhappy or lonely. Sometimes a person with dementia may want to ‘go home’ because they feel anxious or unhappy so establishing their mood can help understand more.

4. Try diverting the conversation. Having a distraction like a book or photo, can help ease person’s feelings of anxiety by giving them a chance to reminisce.

5. Keep a log of when they are asking to go home. For example, is it later in the day and possibly due to sundowning? Is it near meal times or when the environment is noisier than usual?

NEWSLETTER DISTRIBUTION VOLUNTEERS!

We are on the lookout for friendly distribution volunteers to help deliver our quarterly newsletters to places loved and used by older people across North Somerset. Think gyms, community centres, cafés, clubs, social groups, doctors’ surgeries etc.

Our newsletter is created by older people, for older people, and it’s packed with all sorts of great content: money guidance, wellbeing tips, ways to get moving again, handy contacts, clever tricks, and plenty more. It’s a brilliant resource and we’d love your help to get it into the hands of even more people.

How It Works

- One of our team can drop a box of newsletters straight to your door, or you’re welcome to pick them up from our Weston-super-Mare office.

- We’ll have a quick chat about the places you’d like to deliver to, and we’ll check our list to make sure you’re not doubling up with another volunteer.

- After that, you’re free to deliver them whenever it suits you, at your own pace and in your own time

- You can claim back any travel expenses incurred as part of this voluntary role.

If you have any questions please contact me on 01934 416486 or email IANS@vansmail.org.uk.

We look forward to hearing from you!

Looks like a great resource.

'When is dad coming to visit?'
'Will I be going home soon?'
'Who are you?'

For those close to people with dementia, how to respond to difficult questions can be a daily challenge. Is it acceptable to lie - ever? Or should we just tell the brutal truth - always?

Read our advice to understand more about this behaviour and decide when it might be better to lie or not tell the whole truth: http://spkl.io/6180AWvUQ

A little trip out to Clevedon for Mrs C - whilst dodging the showers we enjoyed a lovely little visit to Osborne Community Cafe in Clevedon. For (I’ve been reliably informed) the best piece of Victoria sandwich sponge, and warm hot chocolate - with great views across the channel and a very warm welcome. A great place to relax and chat . We also managed to pick up some info from Burnham & Weston Energy CIC which will be helpful during the cooler months to come. 😀
