This lovely Collie is Mac. Mac has recently been struggling with weakness in his back legs and discomfort in his carpal joints (a joint in the lower forelimb). Today was Mac’s first physio session. His treatment included massage to reduce compensatory muscle tension and Laser therapy to help manage pain. He also went home with some exercises to do with his owners between his sessions to help maintain muscle mass and strength and improve his mobility.

This lovely boy is Zack. He is a 13 year old border collie who has been having physiotherapy and hydrotherapy to help mange his osteoarthritis.

Between his sessions, Zack and his owner work on exercises at home which have been prescribed to target various areas of weakness or compensation to help increase Zack’s muscle mass and strength, improve comfort and maintain mobility. Here you can see Zack carrying out his pole exercises, helping to improve and maintain the range of motion in his joints and his proprioception.

5 month old Archie has had a tough start to life. He had to have surgery to address abnormal alignment of the bones of the elbow joint due to different growth rates of the radius and ulna resulting in pain and lameness.
Archie has been making a good recovery since his surgery and has recently started hydrotherapy and physiotherapy to help with his rehabilitation.
It is hard work staying still when you are young and everything is exciting, but Archie was the perfect patient!

Hector is a 12 year old Dalmatian who has physiotherapy and hydrotherapy to help manage his osteoarthritis. Hector definitely doesn’t act his age and doesn’t like to sit still, so his owner was shocked when he completely relaxed and took the opportunity to have a little nap whilst he enjoyed a massage!

Gracie May is a Mastiff Cross who underwent a total hip replacement back in April. Unfortunately as a complication of the surgery, Gracie’s sciatic nerve was damaged. The sciatic nerve runs from the lower back, down the back leg and is a major nerve involved in controlling movement of the leg. As a result of the damage, Gracie had little control of the leg and was unable to use it as she normally would.

Gracie began physiotherapy to help reduce pain, aid healing, improve her gait and increase muscle mass and strength in the limb as well as addressing compensatory issues else where in the body. Alongside her physiotherapy sessions, Gracie has also been having hydrotherapy with myself and the team at Aquavet - Hydrotherapy and her owner has been working hard on her home exercises between sessions. The first video below shows Gracie prior to starting physio and hydrotherapy, whilst the second video shows Gracie now. Although Gracie still has a way to go, she has made a huge improvement!

This is Nala the Tibetan Terrier. Nala started having physiotherapy when she was diagnosed with hip dysplasia and patella luxation in both of her back legs to help manage pain, improve joint range of motion and mobility and strengthen the surrounding muscles to support the joints.
Nala finds her sessions very exciting, but soon settles down and enjoys a massage!

Poor Poppy started her physio journey back in October after she ruptured her cruciate ligament meaning she had to have TPLO surgery. Carrying out a combination of physio and hydrotherapy along with hard work from Poppy and her owner meant she made a great recovery following her surgery. However, just as we were about to sign Poppy off from her treatment, the cruciate ligament in the other leg ruptured meaning Poppy had to have a second surgery. Her rehabilitation this time round has not been as straight forward, but I’m pleased to say Poppy is now making great progress and should be back to her normal self in no time!

Claw care is really important, particularly in the management of an elderly or arthritic dog as they are often less active so their claws don’t get worn down like they used to on walks or during activity.

Long claws can hinder comfortable mobility, altering the way a dog moves, putting strain on joints, muscles, tendons and ligaments, ultimately leading to pain. They can also reduce traction leading to the dog slipping and potentially causing injury.

Checking your dog’s paws regularly can also help to identify issues such as abnormally worn claws or hair on the paws which can indicate an underlying neurological or orthopaedic issue that affects the dogs ability to place its paw correctly.

Ensuring your dog’s claws aren’t too long and identifying potential problems will help your dog maintain a happy and active life.
