Thank you CATScotland for inviting me to deliver a Nature Connection workshop for your CPD day today! It was fantastic to be at The Burrell Collection, what a wonderful natural space both inside and outside.

Waiting for my early morning therapy client, I was blessed to witness breakfast time on the moor. It offered a peaceful start to the day.

Feeling forever grateful for the leap of faith I took over a year ago to break free from the four walls and set up The Outdoor Psychologist in the beautiful North York Moors.

Working out here has positively served my wellbeing, enabling me to bring the best version of myself to my work and home life.

Thank you to all my family, friends and clients who have supported me in this venture. I am feeling grateful and blessed as I step into this New Year.

With in and practitioners at an all time high, need to attend to staff well-being more creatively than ever.

Cooley and colleagues (2020) highlighted the benefits to practitioners of taking therapy outdoors, in their BPS guidance.

As outdoor therapists we can soak up the psychological and physical benefits of being in and developing a deeper connection with whilst we work.

And we can experience the support of the natural environment as a co-container. Nature provides tools for and and ultimately means we don’t have to shoulder all the emotional containment, as we do in the therapy room.

I chose to take my therapeutic work , in part as I needed to find a more and way to do the job I love.

Are you a relational based or ? Would you like to explore more about connecting with nature and using nature therapeutically?

At the double fell race! Felt good to get out there and push myself, but it was hard at times too!
Anchoring on to the landscape, really helped me to observe but not get engulfed by the burn in my legs.
I held on to just putting one foot in front of the other on the uphill sections. Rather than looking up and getting overwhelmed by how far there was to go.
The tips here aren’t just useful for running, but for managing daily life, thoughts, feelings and sensations too.
How did you get into nature this weekend? How had it helped you?

Feeling overwhelmed by the pace of life or still struggling to get over the January blues?

Take a green break. Connect with nature, tapping into your 5 senses to bring you back in to the present moment.

Notice the thoughts your mind brings, give them a label (categorise by type of thought) and let them each go.

Scan your body for emotional and physiological sensations. Place your hand on the part that is experiencing sensation and breathe in to it. Make room for it to be just as it is and take the sensations with you on your journey.

Refocus on the here and now through anchoring on to what you can see, hear, touch, taste and smell. 🌿💚🪴

You could try:
Going for a walk, run or cycle
Spending time in your garden
Gardening
Looking out of the window at a view
Taking the long route through a park
Whilst travelling by train or bus…

Testimonial Alert!!!! 🙏

“For several months, I was fortunate to be a client of Abi, a clinical psychologist. During this time, I was able to make tremendous strides in my personal growth and healing. For years, I was severely depressed as a result of a diagnosis for an incurable neurological disease. It was a diagnosis that greatly affected my family life. Abi is a masterful therapist who truly listens and understands. She is compassionate, kind, and extremely knowledgeable. I felt safe and supported while in her care. Abi's treatments have been invaluable and have allowed me to gain insight and clarity into my issues. I am forever grateful for the work she has done with me and highly recommend her outstanding services.”

Wow, I love how the outdoor therapy space transforms through the seasons, and with changes to the weather.

This week my clients have been treated to a dusting of white snow, glistening and dancing in the sunlight.

A reminder that even in the darker times in our lives, to be open to seeking out those sparkly moments.

Looking to nature, can help us to understand our experiences better. The cyclical nature of the seasons, helps us to normalise the ebb and flow of life.

We can understand that even when things feel bleak, there may be gems hidden beneath the surface if we open ourselves up to them. Whilst also being aware that, our struggles don’t last forever, as we learn to grow around them, we find brighter days on the horizon.

I took the opportunity to make the most out of the frosty morning, with a mindful run.

There’s nothing better than the cold fresh air filling my lungs, the frost glittering in the sunlight and the crisp crunch underfoot.

Getting out into nature and paying attention to our body and the world around us using our 5 senses, is a great way to unhook from our busy, on-the-go minds and find some stillness.

I always take frequent pauses in any walk or run, to take in as much as I can. In nature, focus on the journey, rather than the destination.

Here are some beauties that caught my eye this morning.

A wonderful wintry morning at the “office”! My clients and I were blessed with sightings of deer, robins, curious cows, geese and the wonderful sound of a woodpecker.

Whilst immersed in nature, therapy can be calming, invigorating, and awe-inspiring.
