I am delighted to announce last Friday I was able to congratulate another group of fantastic delegates on becoming Mental Health First Aiders. They attended the on line MHFA adult 2 day course I have been running over the last 2 weeks. If anyone would like further information about the mental health first aider and mental health aware courses I am organising please email me debbie@dbcounsellingservices.com or telephone 07788100201. Dates of next MHFA course is 23rd and 30th July so if you or your workplace are interested I would be very happy to discuss further with you. Please see below testimonials from 2 delegates:

'I can highly recommend this course for anybody. The skills and knowledge you gain are relevant in the workplace, but also in general life situations. Debbie was a fantastic trainer, who was knowledgeable and the examples from her experiences really helped embed understanding. Debbie made the whole group feel at ease and ensured that all participants were comfortable with the content. I can highly recommend attending the MHFA course facilitated by Debbie.'
Jo, Head of Personnel and Wellbeing

'I have recently completed a mental first aid course which Debbie ran. I thoroughly enjoyed the session time, the way in which the course was delivered which was professional whilst fun which made it much easier to learn. The course was made to be very interactive which really cemented the learning. Debbie clearly has a passion for her work whilst also being passionate for sharing information and allowing us to grow into a subject I was aware of but didn’t really understand. I am now enthusiastic about implementing things in the workplace in the hope it will help people as well as utilising some of the tools closer to home. I would have no hesitation is recommending Debbie to anyone looking for support in mental health whether it be a course or personal treatment'.

I am really pleased to say that this week I have been able to welcome back clients for face to face counselling in my private therapy room. It is so lovely to see clients again in person and to meet clients that I first started working with online, face to face.
My private therapy room is 4 miles from Pocklington in the village of Bielby.

So pleased to see this announcement from the Government and that training for Senior Mental Health Leads in schools will begin this Autumn, after previous delays. The extension of the Wellbeing in Education Recovery Fund is also welcomed. All schools should be supported so they can benefit from the training and the roll-out of Mental Health Support Teams. As a counsellor working in private practice with young people and adults and as a counsellor working with students at a leading University as well as a mental health trainer this is such an important time for people to access training in mental health awareness and being able to support pupils and staff within the education sector. Early intervention is the key to recovery.

17 million in mental health funding for schools and colleges to help them recover from the challenges of the pandemic.

Tomorrow sees the start of Mental Health Awareness Week 10th – 16th May and this year’s theme is nature.
Mental Health Awareness Week is an annual event when there is an opportunity for the whole of the UK to focus on achieving good mental health. It’s about starting conversations about mental health and the things that can affect it. This year’s theme of nature is about individuals, communities and governments to think about connecting with nature and how nature can improve our mental health.
Over the last year with the Pandemic affecting everyone in some way, research has shown that being in nature has been one of the most popular coping strategies that people have used during an exceptionally challenging time. Connecting with nature can help people manage their mental health and feel better about themselves.
So let's start a conversation as change begins with talking.

There are still a few spaces left on our next Adult online Mental Health First Aider course June 1 – 11. The live online sessions are over 4 mornings and the course is a blend of instructor led and individual learning. Working in mental health I am able to provide insights which help the learning experiences of the delegates. Although it is a difficult and emotive subject I ensure the course is enjoyable and safe for all. Don't take my word for it, read a couple of comments from previous learners:

"I just wanted to thank you for the excellent MHFA course. The course content and supporting material was easy to read and follow and particularly relevant in the current circumstances. Your delivery of the online workshops was professional and concise whilst always allowing time for the delegates to ask questions and discuss issues.

By the very nature of the course there were a number of difficult and personal discussions but you handled these with great care and understanding, providing a very safe environment for all participants..."

"The MHFA course is hugely informative and practical. The interactive workshop led by two experienced and skilled practitioners
has increased my knowledge regarding mental health and has provided me with the tools to feel more confident when giving support to the students I work with".

Everyone who attends an Adult MHFA course will learn to:

- Spot the early signs of a mental health issue
- Feel confident in how to offer and provide initial help to a person experiencing a mental health issue
- Preserve life where a person may be at risk of harm to themselves or others
- Help stop mental ill health from getting worse
- Promote recovery of good mental health
- Guide someone towards appropriate treatment and other sources of help
- Understand the stigma that exists around mental health.

Independent evaluations prove that MHFA works. It provides the skills, knowledge and understanding of first aid for mental health and how to effectively support those experiencing distress. This empowers both individuals and communities to understand the signs and symptoms of mental health issues and how best to support themselves and those around them in recovery.

The Adult MHFA course is for businesses, organisations and individuals. In the current climate it feels to be especially relevant and businesses are recognising the impact mental ill health has on their organisation. (See some figures below).

* Approximately 1 in 4 adults in England have been diagnosed with mental illness.
* Su***de is the most common cause of death for men aged 20 - 49.
* Mental Health issues are responsible for 91 million working days lost in the UK.
* These issues in the workplace cost about £30 billion a year.
* The key to recovery is early intervention and support.

Currently it is not mandatory to have mental health first aiders in the same way it is to have physical first aiders however in light of recent developments in the world and the cost to industry of absenteeism due to mental ill health it is likely to become mandatory and increasingly businesses and organisations are seeing the benefits of investing in supporting employees with mental health.

As we emerge from the lockdown and life takes on new challenges now is the time to be considering how prepared are you or your workplace fore supporting anyone who might be experiencing mental health difficulties?
Poor mental health costs UK employers up to £45 billion each year. But for every £1 spent by employers on mental health interventions, they get back £5 in reduced absence, presenteeism and staff turnover (Deloitte, 2020). Early intervention is key to recovery and having the knowledge and confidence to spot the signs and be able to sign post and support is becoming increasingly important as we start to navigate our way in the 'new normal'.
I am thrilled to announce that spaces are available for my next online MHFA course 1 - 11 June see information below. If you are interested in becoming a qualified Mental Health First Aider please

'I am so pleased I attended the Mental Health First Aid course. It has definitely expanded my knowledge on the subject of mental health and has given me confidence to deal with situations which may arise.

Debbie and Simon did an amazing job to educate us on such a difficult topic without it being too heavy and dark.

I can honestly say that for the first time ever after completing a course, I came away wanting to find out more about the subject.

I would definitely recommend using Debbie and Simon to deliver your training, you most definitely won’t be disappointed'.
