Happy new year, everyone! I’m getting ready to get my body back in the studio for your Friday Pilates with Props classes tomorrow! 🙌🏻
And talking of bodies, this is the time when we’re usually swamped with ads for miracle diets or images of fantastically toned people promising that their fitness classes will give us their 6-pack abs or thigh gaps. We’re taught to always see our bodies as something that needs to look better, not something wonderful to value and appreciate.
When I first did my Pilates teacher training 5 years ago, my biggest hang up was that I don’t look like what most people may imagine a Pilates instructor looks like: my generous hourglass curves definitely don’t match the slinky hips, slender thighs and washboard waists displayed in tight shorts and strappy crop tops we see in many Pilates posts. And being curvy can add its challenges as anyone with more than a D cup will know when you attempt a rollover! (“It’s like motor-boating yourself” is my favourite ever comment made by a client in class! 😂)
I can’t pretend I’ll ever be completely at ease with my body shape, especially as my body is changing again as I age and the fact I now spend more hours each week at my desk or in the boardroom rather than in the studio.
But thanks to how Pilates makes me feel, I’ve come to love the fact that under my soft curves and squishy bits, I have a strong core, supple spine (despite long term back problems) and a body that moves powerfully and with ease. That’s far more important to me than being able to squeeze myself into a smaller pair of leggings.
This is why I made the conscious decision over the last year to post more images and videos of me in the Pilates studio so you can see you don’t need to be a certain shape or super fit to be great at Pilates too!
