Setting boundaries is an important part of self-care. Therapy can be a great way to explore how you’re setting boundaries and develop the boundaries you feel would help you.
Setting boundaries can be hard, and doesn’t always come naturally if you’ve experienced abuse in your past or present relationships, but it can also be incredibly rewarding and a source of growth and safety.

Healing after abuse and other kinds of trauma takes time. A reminder to slow down and be gentle with yourself. Getting through the day is more than enough.

If you'd like to know more about how I help clients who have experienced abuse, have a read of this article I wrote for Counselling Directory about healing from narcissistic abuse. Narcissistic abuse is an insidious form of emotional or psychological abuse that can have a huge impact on a survivor's sense of self-worth, identity and mental health. In this article, I describe some key steps to healing: identifying the abuse, placing responsibility where it belongs, self-care, boundaries and distance to protect you, developing your knowledge of narcissistic abuse, building your support network and therapy with a trauma-informed counsellor.

Alicia Tromp explores the impact of narcissistic abuse and shares strategies for healing.

Healing from trauma takes time. Be gentle with yourself. I love this poem by Nayyirah Waheed, who identifies as a “quiet poet” and writes on racial identity, love, self-compassion and healing from the violence of racism, misogyny and xenophobia.

Healing from abuse is possible: it is not a linear journey, it takes time, but it is a hopeful, empowering journey, and there is support out there.
As a counsellor, I help survivors of abuse on their healing journey. I work in a trauma-informed way, meaning:
- I approach the issues you bring to counselling with an understanding of how trauma affects our brain and body.
- I see emotional distress as rooted in our life experiences, not as a fault in our brain.
- I listen empathically to my clients’ life experiences, while holding the wider systemic factors that have an impact on clients’ lives in awareness, such as: oppressive social norms, beliefs and narratives, or being part of a stigmatised minority.
- Working in a trauma-informed way also means understanding the importance of creating a safe, trusting therapeutic relationship. As a therapist, it is my absolute priority to make sure that your counselling sessions provide you with a caring, holding environment. I see empathy as deeply healing.
- I take a non-pathologising approach to my clients: rather than focusing on distress as mental illness or on diagnostic labels, I work with my clients in a holistic way, looking at their individual strengths and resources and helping them identify what they need. I see my clients as resilient and capable of finding their own way forward.

Are you looking for therapy to help you with adjusting to living with a chronic health condition? I support clients affected by chronic illness such as ME / chronic fatigue syndrome, migraine and vestibular disorders. If you’d like to know more, have a read of this article I wrote for Counselling Directory about the impact on mental health of living with a balance disorder / persistent dizziness, what you can do to improve your emotional well-being, and how counselling can help you with that.

What are vestibular disorders and how can counselling support people living with one?

My approach is rooted in person-centred and humanistic counselling. As a therapist, I work with what my clients bring to the sessions. They decide what they want to talk about.

In humanistic therapy, you are considered the expert on yourself and your life. Your counsellor won't give you advice, but brings an empathic, engaged and authentic presence to your interactions.

I work at a pace that feels comfortable for my clients and regularly review our work together. I welcome feedback and my aim as a counsellor is to be open and approachable.

I also work relationally: when it feels useful, I work with what happens in the here-and-now of the counselling relationship. This can be a powerful way to further explore the issues that clients bring to counselling.

Please feel free to ask me for more details of how I work.
