Theraplay can help adopted children build secure attachments by "re-parenting" them through playful, nurturing interactions.

Adopted children, especially those who have experienced early trauma or neglect, may not have had consistent, loving caregiving in infancy. Theraplay recreates key elements of early parent-child bonding—like eye contact, touch, and playful engagement—in a structured, therapeutic way. This helps rewire the child's attachment patterns, building trust, emotional regulation, and a sense of safety with their adoptive parents.

We provide a trauma and attachment service which uses Theraplay as one of its therapy focuses. To find out more, email our specialist OT Marion Cavan at marion@OT4me.co.uk.

Well done Lizzie!

What if that "challenging" behaviour isn’t attitude… but a sensory response?

This was a question asked on our recent Workplace Needs Assessor course.

We then began reframing behaviour through a sensory lens, looking a bit deeper, understanding the biological response to the environment.

This is such a vital part of the neurodiversity conversation and should form part of any workplace needs assessment.

We were so grateful of the input by Elizabeth Huxford from OT4me Ltd, our course participants shared their feedback with us.

Look around you and pay attention to how your environment is making you feel, imagine the additional cognitive demand in custody environments and how they can impact executive function.

Think of the interview that a candidate is about to attend, does it allow them to present the best version of themselves?

How often do we hear these judgements at work? And how often do we pause to ask: what might be going on beneath the surface?

Understanding that behaviour is communication.

Adoption is a beautiful and complex journey—and no two stories are the same. Here are just a few important facts:

👨‍👩‍👧 Types of Adoption:

Domestic: Within the same country

International: From another country

Foster Care: Adopting a child from the foster system

Open vs. Closed: Open includes some contact with birth families; closed does not

👶 The average age of adopted children in the UK and US is 6–7 years, but children of all ages—infants to teens—need loving families.

⏳ Adoption can be a long process, often taking months or years with assessments, legal steps, and matching.

🧠 Emotional & Psychological Aspects

Adoption can bring deep questions around identity, origin, and belonging.

💬 Many adopted children—especially those with early life trauma—may need support with:

Sensory processing

Attachment and bonding

Emotional regulation and behaviour

So, what a drama we have had with our pages! Some of you may know that we were here at: Sensory-OT4me Ltd. for years! We then got shut down (long story, very quick learning about cyber hacks, and very stressful!) and set up this page.

As we had nearly 900 followers on the previous page, we are moving back!
