Prevent Head Lice!!

Why do I need to contain the hair in braids or buns?

Wearing the hair in braids, buns or braided ponytails help alleviate the bridge that allows the adult louse to transfer. As a louse moves from one person to another, they crossover using the hair as a bridge.

One of the main purposes of a louse is to infest as many people as possible. Transfers generally starts to happen in the first 3 weeks after a new colony is established. The growth of an infestation is quick with 50 to 100 adults possible within the first 2 weeks. As adults start to mature a new host is needed. The colony will not just die off. Each generation will continue to reproduce until forced from the head of hair.

Repellant Scents and their Importance:

Part of the journey of having head lice is the follow through!! After having the infestation removed it becomes vital to protect the child from having a reoccurence of another adult louse transfer. To help avoid a new lice infestion one should take precautions by wearing the hair in braids or buns as well as using a shampoo and conditoner that has a repellant scent.

Since coming to the Huntsville area from Atlanta, I have noticed that the main product on store shelves is a Rosemary forward brand. It is a great product but the problem is that everyone uses it. Unlike the Atlanta market, there is not a variety of repelling products being used. We need to introduce new scents into the community in order to slow the spread of head lice.

If you are looking for a lice repellant shampoo and conditioner, look for one that is peppermint, geranium, eucalpytus or lavender forward. Bonus if it has a splash of citrus. The citrus breaks up the glue to the nits which helps them release from the hair strand. Even adding a combination of these scents to your exsisting shampoo and conditioner is a great idea. Using a few layers of repellant products creates an unfavorable environment for the louse and hopefully she will choose another head of hair!

Quality products that are most beneficial will have essential oils in them vs. a fragrance (which has no affect). Continue using repellant products for atleast 30 days post removal process. The scent leftover from the old lice family dissipates within that 30 day time period. I personally recommend using them through elementary school combined with braids or buns.

A child is twice as likely to get a new head lice infestation within the first 30 days after getting rid of the prior infestation. Lice leave a scent in the hair that indicates “Here is a good host”. It shows the child can hold a thriving infestation. The pheromones, saliva and urine of the live lice are absorbed into the hair strand of the person affected with head lice. It takes that scent thirty days to fade out of the hair after the infestation is removed.

• Pheromones, Saliva and Urine
• Lasts 30 Days
• Attracts a New Lice Infestation

The number 1 question that I have recieved over the many years in the lice removal industry is:

Where do lice come from?

Lice have been around since the dawn of time. Some people believe they were part of the Great Plague as depicted in the Bible Exodus 8:16. Nits and nit combs have been found on the Pharaohs in Egypt, as well as, been discovered in the tombs with mummies.

A fertilized female louse will use the hair as a bridge to transfer from one host to another. She will start laying nits on day one.

1. What color is a nit?

When attached to the hair strand the nit shows up shiny and translucent. This is the air pocket. When removed, and placed on a white paper towel it becomes brown. It is the embryo inside that gives the nit a dark color. An empty shell shows up translucent regardless of the location.

2. If a nit comes off the hair strand, can it hatch?

No, the nit and embryo inside are rendered non-viable. The nit needs the heat from the human host for incubation, 89-93 degrees. It is like a chicken egg.

What happens if someone never treats the head lice infestation?

A case of head lice will never go away on its own. The infestation will continue to grow at a rapid pace. The head lice will transfer to new environments. Eventually, siblings and parents will have it. Best friends will have it. The child suffers a great deal socially, emotionally and physically.

The larger the infestation is, the longer time it will take to remove. Whether it is done at home or by a professional. Working on it at home needs to be continuous and will likely take weeks or months of combing. If you are going to a professional, do your research and fully understand how much it will cost you. It will take hours of combing to remove an extreme infestation.

Breaking the Life Cycle of a Head Lice Infestation: The most important part of the treatment process of any head lice infestation is Treatment Combing. The Lice Specialist of Alabama believes in removing an infestation rather than killing it. Combing is a skill that is refined and improved upon over time with repetition and practice. Lice removal is a process. Combing is an art. Tools are a necessity.

With 15 years of hands on experience in the lice removal industry, I have developed many different combing techniques to utilize during the combing process. Hair type, size of infestion and age of person determines which processes are necessary for the complete removal of head lice. At a minimum, I work through the hair 3-4 different ways to ensure nits and live lice are removed. Moving forward each client will leave with written instructions and tips for prevention. A follow up visit is highly recommended and included in the treatment cost. This visit is the next step to confirm the infestation is gone.

Common Mistakes
• Rushing through the Combing Process
• Not Using Enough Pressure on the Scalp
• Leaving Too Much Lice Evidence Behind After the Treatment
• No Follow Through Combing

Discovering head lice instantly creates an emotional response. Panic, feelings of dirtiness and shame are just a few of the many emotions that infiltrate the brain. Over the years and throughout the many generations before us, people with lice have been perceived as dirty and unkept. For this reason, now in 2025, when lice are discovered the feeling of shame arises and takes over. The panic that the mind and body experiences is compared to nothing else. That emotional response when finding head lice for the very first time is completely normal and is experienced by every single person.

The only way to break the stigma of having head lice is to talk about it. Period. If we as a community normalize head lice, we take away the fear. We break the cycle. We reduce the number of cases. We shift the shame to compassion.
