Is Hypnotherapy Safe for Children?

As a parent, it is natural to be concerned about your child's well-being. When considering therapies, they sometimes ask "is hypnotherapy safe for children?" Especially regarding trauma and negative experiences held in the subconscious mind.

Hypnotherapy has gained popularity as a therapeutic tool. However, many still question its safety for younger individuals. In truth, this therapeutic approach can be a beneficial option for children when guided by a qualified professional. Children have a great ability to work with hypnotherapy and are very in touch with their subconscious mind - the power centre of the mind. This makes them excellent candidates for this treatment.

When a Parent Asks "Is Hypnotherapy Safe for Children?"

Only this week, I met a new 12-year-old client and their parents. There was some concern over doing 'hypnosis' with their child. This is because, for many people, the only source of knowledge they have experienced about this topic is through television. I explained that there is a big difference between the reality of a clinical hypnotherapy session and stage hypnosis or how this treatment is shown on television. Once I explained a little more about the process and how their child would be in control at all times, both parents were happy for me to proceed.

Incorporating Other Holistic Treatments for a More Beneficial Experience

Traumatic and other emotionally charged experiences can linger in a child’s subconscious. These hidden emotions can manifest as anxiety, fear, or behavioural issues. Hypnotherapy, combined with techniques like Colour Therapy and Emotional Freedom Technique, can help release these negative emotions. Together, these therapies create a supportive environment for healing. Children enjoy working with the colour bottles. This makes therapy feel more enjoyable and many look forward to their sessions.

Anxiety - Listening Beneath the Symptoms

Anxiety is often treated as something to be eliminated; a set of uncomfortable symptoms to be suppressed or controlled. Racing thoughts, a tight chest, disturbed sleep, constant worry. In conventional approaches, the focus is frequently on quietening these surface experiences. While this can offer temporary relief, it can also miss something essential. To release the grip it holds, a holistic approach is a great treatment for anxiety.

Anxiety is not random. It is the nervous system communicating that something feels overwhelming, unsafe, unresolved, or out of balance. When we approach anxiety holistically, we move from fighting it to understanding it.

Causes of Anxiety

A holistic approach recognises that anxiety does not exist in isolation. It is shaped by past experiences, emotional patterns, belief systems, stress levels, physical health, lifestyle habits, and the way the nervous system has learned to respond to threat. It may be connected to unprocessed emotions, long-held fears, perfectionism, people-pleasing, or years of being “on alert.” Simply teaching someone to breathe differently or think positively, while helpful, may not be enough if the deeper drivers remain untouched.

When we take time to listen beneath the symptoms, we begin to uncover the underlying needs anxiety is trying to express. It may be asking for rest after prolonged pressure. Often, it is signalling emotional wounds that were never fully acknowledged and healed. Sometimes it is responding to a body that has forgotten how to feel safe.

Holistic Therapies as Treatment for Anxiety

Holistic therapies such as hypnotherapy and Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) work at these deeper levels which makes them a great treatment for anxiety. They help calm the stress response, gently reprocess emotional memories, shift limiting beliefs, and restore a sense of inner safety. Rather than forcing change, they invite the system into balance.

We do not dismiss medical or psychological support where it is needed. It is about widening the lens. It is about recognising that lasting calm does not come from controlling symptoms alone, but from addressing the conditions that created them.

Anxiety softens when the body no longer feels under threat. Rather than being pushed away, emotions are allowed to be processed and released. Then, the mind learns that it does not have to stay hypervigilant to survive.

True healing is not about silencing anxiety. It is about understanding it, working with it, and gently teaching the nervous system a new way to respond to life.

Overthinking can feel overwhelming. It consumes your mind and leaves you feeling drained. Many people struggle with racing thoughts daily, often unsure how to break the cycle. Thankfully, hypnotherapy offers a powerful solution to stop overthinking.

Overthinking is the mind's way of trying to keep you safe. All of those "what if" scenarios that run through your mind cause anxiety. Your mind then wants to find a solution and so the cycle of overthinking continues.

There can be other reasons for overthinking. For example, stress can be a cause. Additionally, this can be a learned behaviour. Sometimes, if a parent or guardian is an overthinker, this can lead to adopting this behaviour.

Hypnotherapy to Stop Overthinking

Hypnotherapy is a technique that allows access to the subconscious mind. Importantly, if you've experienced trauma or negative experiences, these can manifest as persistent overthinking. Therefore, by addressing the root causes, we can create lasting change. This is a key part of the work I do, which can be transformative for many people.

Can Hypnotherapy Help with Anxiety?

Anxiety affects millions of people on a daily basis. Many seek effective solutions to manage their feelings and alleviate anxiety. Hypnotherapy presents a powerful option worth exploring.

Using Hypnotherapy To Alleviate Anxiety

Hypnotherapy can indeed help address anxiety. It allows individuals to access their subconscious mind. Many emotions and experiences, including trauma, are stored here. As a therapist, much of my work focuses on uncovering these root causes. By addressing past traumas, and building new cognitive processes, we can alleviate anxiety.

During a hypnotherapy session, you enter a relaxed state. In this state, we address any negative beliefs you are holding, which are contributing to anxiety. Additionally, we create a pathway to feel safe in whatever scenarios we need to. Consequently, the unconscious sense of danger, causing the anxiety response, begins to dissolve. This can lead to a significant reduction in anxiety levels. For some, it can eliminate anxiety altogether.

In today’s fast-paced world, where information flows continuously through the screens in our pockets, it's not surprising that many of us face what’s known as health anxiety. This condition often finds its roots in the overwhelming barrage of 24/7 news cycles, alarming headlines, and personal experiences, such as illness in our families. Understanding health anxiety is the first step to healing.

Understanding Health Anxiety and Why People Suffer

Health anxiety manifests as an excessive preoccupation with having a serious illness, even when medical evaluations show no signs of one. For many, this remains an ever-present shadow, lurking and casting doubt on physical sensations and health-related thoughts. But why do so many people suffer from this condition?

Health anxiety is your mind's way of trying to protect you. It has joined up certain dots to believe there is a threat to your well-being. However, the reality is usually that there is no threat. Uncovering the reasons behind this offers a great opportunity to overcome anxiety.

With the worries often come physical symptoms, which sufferers fixate on. As the worry increases, the physical symptoms also increase. It's a vicious cycle. Importantly, in my experience, in working with numerous clients, those physical symptoms are the body responding to all the stress, worry and tension the sufferer is experiencing. Medical confirmations of good health are often not enough to find peace. Hence why it is so important to address the root causes of the health anxiety.

There is a quiet place inside you, beyond all the noise and rush.
A place untouched by opinions, untouched by fear.
It has always been there — waiting.
Reminding you....
You are already enough

But somewhere along the way, we are taught to listen to the world before we listen to ourselves.
We are taught to gather approval like water in our hands, desperate to hold it, even as it slips through our fingers.

It is easy to forget:
You were never meant to be shaped by other people's stories.
You are not a reflection in someone else’s mirror.

You are the river itself — flowing, alive, whole.
You are the sky behind every passing cloud.
You are already enough.

When old doubts whisper, when past hurts linger, it can feel hard to believe this truth.
Sometimes, the mind clings to old fears without even meaning to, weaving them quietly into the fabric of our lives.

But healing is possible.
You can soften those old patterns.
You can choose a new way.
You are already enough

Gentle practices help guide you back to yourself —
help you unweave the old threads,
