Dealing with Overwhelm

Many people are dealing with overwhelm quietly and without help. This can feel like standing in the middle of a crowded highway, where cars rush past you, and you can't find the way to safety.

Hence, it’s that feeling of being inundated with too many responsibilities or emotions, creating a sense of chaos and confusion.

Moreover, it is like a glass filled to the brim with water, where even a small drop extra can cause it to overflow, the cumulative weight of stressors can lead to a tipping point.

Stress becomes overwhelm when everything feels too much. Very often you are managing the stresses of life but the tipping point can be when a small situation occurs. This is because you have nothing left in your reserves. If not addressed, this can lead to a breakdown, physical or mentally.

This feeling often leads to difficulty concentrating, making decisions, or simply getting through daily tasks. It can feel like carrying a heavy backpack, where every additional responsibility makes it harder to move forward. Depression and anxiety can creep in. Additionally, many people experiencing overwhelm will struggle to sleep well.

Help for Dealing with Overwhelm

Managing overwhelm is essential for maintaining mental well-being. One effective technique is hypnotherapy. Hypnotherapy can be likened to a guided exploration, similar to a gentle boat ride down a tranquil stream. Why Do I People Please?

People-pleasing can be understood as a behaviour where individuals prioritise the needs and desires of others over their own. This tendency often stems from various experiences and messages received during childhood. "Why do I people please?" is a question commonly asked. People pleasers are often liked by others because they are not confrontational or do as their friends and family please. However, the downside is the damage it can do to the person doing the pleasing. In my own work, I have seen many people pleasers who suffer anxiety and depression or feel 'put on' by others.

Many people who become chronic pleasers might have grown up in environments where approval was conditional. For instance, children may have learned that love and acceptance were linked to their ability to meet the expectations of parents, caregivers, or peers. If a child felt that their value was determined by how well they made others happy, they might develop the habit of putting others first, believing it to be essential for maintaining relationships.

In some cases, children may have also witnessed family dynamics where conflict was avoided at all costs. This observation can lead them to assume the role of peacekeepers, trying to keep everyone comfortable, often at their own expense. As adults, these individuals may continue to seek harmony and approval by suppressing their own needs, leading to feelings of resentment and dissatisfaction over time.

Additionally, past experiences of rejection or criticism can reinforce the desire to please others. An individual who faced negative feedback might strive to earn acceptance through compliance, developing a pattern of behaviour that prioritises others' happiness.

The Lasting Effects of Trauma

Trauma is an inevitable part of life that can leave us feeling shattered and vulnerable. However, healing from these experiences is possible. It often requires patience, self-compassion, and support from loved ones or professionals. Many individuals find solace in therapy, creative outlets, or community support, working through the pain to discover resilience they never knew they had. The lasting effects of trauma can reveal themselves at any time.

Yet, it’s essential to recognise that certain events can change us forever. Eating Away Grief

The loss of someone close, whether that loss is expected or not, can be devastating. A wide range of emotions may be attached to that loss. These may include feelings of sadness, anger, betrayal and guilt. Importantly, there is no strict process to grieving. Hence, it is a personal experience and we move through different emotions, which can come in waves. Importantly, there is support for grief which can help you feel lighter and hold the love you had for that person calmly in your heart.

Relationships can be complicated, which is often why the emotions of losing someone can be so difficult to deal with. This may result in suppressing those emotions. Some people may have lost a parent or a sibling that they haven't seen for a decade due to a number of reasons. For others nursing their family member through an illness may have meant that the grief process began some time before death. After this may be guilt, which follows an initial feeling relief once their loved one has been laid to rest.
