Mother’s Day is a chance to celebrate the mothers and mother figures who do so much for their families and the people around them 💐

As many mums spend their time looking after everyone else, it can be easy for their own health to slip down the priority list.

Motherhood takes women through so many different stages, from pregnancy and raising young children to navigating midlife, menopause and beyond,

In our latest blog, Dr Vicky Carre looks at the Motherhood Health Timeline and shares some of the key health considerations for women at different stages of their journey

From pregnancy and childbirth to the demands of raising children, navigating midlife and ageing, the journey of motherhood takes women through profound physical and emotional changes at each stage. And through all of this, many mothers instinctively put everyone else first, often at the expense of t...

The Herbert Protocol is a national scheme supported by Dementia Friendly Guernsey to help keep vulnerable people safe if they go missing.

The idea is simple: carers, family or friends fill in a form with important details about a person such as medication, contact numbers, places they like to go, and a recent photo. If that person ever goes missing, the form can be given to police immediately so they can start searching faster.

Anyone who cares for someone who may be at risk, such as a person living with dementia, can choose to complete a form. It’s a small step that can make a big difference in an emergency.

We are renewing our commitment to the scheme, which has already helped families since it was introduced in Guernsey in 2018.

You can find the form, and a short video explainer, at https://www.guernsey.police.uk/herbert-protocol

Ovarian cancer can be difficult to spot because the symptoms are often vague and easy to dismiss. This is why awareness is so important.

The four key symptoms to look out for are:

- Persistent bloating
- Abdominal or pelvic pain
- Feeling full quickly when eating
- Needing to wee urgently or more often

Other symptoms can include changes in bowel habits, unexplained weight loss, fatigue or back pain.

Most of the time these symptoms will have a harmless explanation. But if something doesn’t feel right, it's always worth getting it checked.

In this blog, Dr Nick Dunn explains what to look out for, when to speak to your GP, and why listening to your body is so important:

During Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month this March, Dr Nick Dunn explains why recognising the possible signs of ovarian cancer matters, what symptoms women should look out for, and why speaking to your GP if something doesn’t feel right can make an important difference. As GPs, we see women every wee...

Thank you to Guernsey Public Health for highlighting this.

It’s so important to check your family’s vaccination records and make sure you are fully protected against measles.

In this blog, Dr Vicky Carre explains what to look out for, why measles is more serious than many people realise, and how vaccination protects not just your child but our wider community👇

The UK Health Security Agency has confirmed a large measles outbreak, mostly affecting unvaccinated children under the age of 10. Reports show multiple schools and nurseries have been impacted, and some children have become very unwell, needing hospital treatment. This reminds us that measles is not...

Meet the Team - Nurse Flo 🩺

Our nursing team plays such an important role in the care we provide every day, from leading our vaccination programme, to chronic disease reviews and preventative health checks. We're proud to have such experienced and compassionate nurses looking after our patients.

Nurse Flo joined Healthcare Group last summer and brought a wealth of hospital experience with her. A Registered General Nurse with a BSc in Adult Nursing, she previously worked on the surgical ward at the Princess Elizabeth Hospital and in the Emergency Department, where she completed additional training including Advanced Life Support and Paediatric Immediate Life Support.

During her time in the Emergency department she also took on the role of End-of-Life Care link nurse, offering one to one support to families who had lost a loved one.

She has a particular interest in assisting with Minor Surgery and skin lesion assessments using our Mole Mapping technology.

Outside of work, Flo enjoys sea swimming all year round, meeting friends and trips to Herm 💙

Shingles 💉

If you are immunosuppressed, protecting yourself against shingles is really important.

Shingles is a common condition that causes a painful rash. It can sometimes lead to serious problems such as long-lasting pain, hearing loss or blindness.

The risk of complications from shingles is higher if you have a weakened immune system, and vaccination is one of the most effective ways to reduce that risk.

We are currently contacting all eligible patients to invite them in for their vaccination.

If you think you may need the vaccine but haven’t received a letter, please give us a call and we can check your records.

Did you know your heart beats around 100,000 times a day? ❤️

It works quietly in the background, pumping blood through a network of arteries and capillaries to support every organ in your body.

As Valentine’s Day approaches, it’s a good moment to think about your heart and the simple things you can do to look after it:

- Get your blood pressure checked regularly, even if you feel well
- Protect your arteries by managing cholesterol, blood sugar and inflammation
- Balance regular movement with proper rest and good-quality sleep
- Be mindful of alcohol and its impact on your heart
- Book routine health checks so problems can be picked up early

We’re very proud to share that, just six weeks into retirement, Dr Mark Downing was sworn in yesterday as a Jurat of the Royal Court.

The position is a great honour and a fitting recognition of the sound judgement, calm nature and integrity Dr Downing demonstrated throughout his career as a GP.

We wish him every success in this next chapter. Congratulations on this well-deserved appointment.
