On Monday 16th December 2024, our Managing Director, Mrs. Mary Tobbin Osei, (Kanko) had the privilege of facilitating a discussion at the training of Journalists and Influencers on Ghana’s new Affirmative Action Act 2024 (Gender Equity Law). The training was organized by Oxfam, in collaboration with the Federation of Canadian Municipals (FCM) for journalists from about 30 media houses and online influencers. This training aimed at empowering the selected journalists and influencers with the knowledge and tools needed to effectively report on and advocate for the implementation of the Affirmative Action Act, ensuring widespread understanding and engagement across all levels of society.
Mrs. Mary Tobbin Osei presented and led discussions on the Role of Media and Influencers in implementing the act and Ethical Reporting on the Affirmative Action Act. Our MD used participatory approaches like brainstorming, energizers, small group discussions, buzz discussions, and stimulation or role plays to make the training interactive and ensure the full participation of all trainees.
The journalists and influencers agreed that they had a critical role to play in ensuring the successful implementation of the act. The facilitator emphasized that the media could lead in educating the public (including policymakers), advocate for effective implementation of the act, and foster partnerships and collaboration to support its implementation. At the end of the training, each journalist and influencer committed to one thing they would do to support the act's implementation.
