The pressure inside a disc varies according to the position of the body and external stress. This position ensures that the least amount of pressure is placed on the lumbar spine. Thus, lie on your back and support your lower legs on, say, a chair so that your iliopsoas does not pull (and thereby increase disc pressure) on your spine.

Sitting positions produce greater pressure on your intervertebral discs than standing positions. This is because the back muscles must work harder (static work) when the body sits. This is due to the change in the passage of the body's vertical midline when sitting. The distance between the body's centre of gravity and the vertical midline increases when one sits. This causes the back muscles to work harder in order to keep the body upright. Intervertebral Disc pressure is due to the bodyweight acting on the disc from above and the contraction force of the surrounding muscles.
Can the same activity or activities be done both in sitting and standing? Why not alternate the performance of the activity or activities between these positions?

*NB*: If you do not take care of your back today, your back will not take care of you tomorrow.
