On 13/10/2022, the management of Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research (NMIMR) on behalf of the sickle cell laboratory received a set of Migele Gel Electrophoresis equipment donated by PerkinElmer to enhance newborn screening for sickle cell disease in Ghana.
The equipment consists of 4 Migele Gel Electrophoresis units, 2 Electrophoresis Power Supplies, and a MultiTemp water bath. This will help to determine haemoglobin types, especially in sickle cell patients (HbSC & HbS) for early detection and treatment.

At a short ceremony to outdoor the equipment management of the laboratory, heads of the Clinical Pathology Department, and the Sickle Cell Foundation of Ghana expressed appreciation to PerkinElmer for supporting the efforts of newborn screening for sickle cell disease in Ghana.

The Strategic Manager of PerkinElmer, Ma**ca Kase, stated that the company is committed to building capacities but will need the government’s support to do that. She also called on the government to consider screening for other diseases such as Hypothyroidism.

The equipment will further speed up work and build capacity for nationwide screening.

PerkinElmer, Inc. is a leading, global provider of end-to-end solutions that help scientists, researchers and clinicians better diagnose disease, discover new and more personalized drugs, monitor the safety and quality of our food, and drive environmental and applied analysis excellence.

Throwback to 2022 World Sickle Cell Day (WSCD) :

WSCD is marked on the 19th of June every year ever since it was officially designated by the UN in December 2008 and first commemorated in June 2009 with the goal of increasing public knowledge and understanding of sickle cell disease and related conditions, and the challenges experienced by patients, their families, and healthcare providers.

On WSCD and within the month of June, individuals, groups, and organizations organize activities across the world to give hope to persons living with the disease. This year the Sickle Cell Foundation of Ghana (SCFG) celebrated WSCD with people living with the disease and health professionals at selected sickle cell clinics in Accra: Korle-Bu and 37 Military hospitals, and in Kumasi: Komfo Anokye hospital.

Based on the theme: 'Support for Sickle Cell Warriors - A Shared Responsibility, the activity was to provide some psychosocial support to the patients and staff of the selected SCD clinics. A big thank you to the management of the facilities and Ayekoo to all SCFG staff.
