(AMR) is a growing threat, driven in part by irrational antibiotic use in food production. To tackle this, the FAO and Ghana’s Veterinary Services Directorate (VSD) have been working with poultry farmers through Farmer Field Schools (FFS) to promote responsible antimicrobial use.

Aurum Ghana, in collaboration with FAO and VSD under the (FF) Phase II Country Grant, engaged 80 poultry farmers on risks and best practices. While many previously relied on antibiotics to boost egg production, FFS training has led to reduced antibiotic use, increased productivity, and higher profit- a win for farmers and public health.

World AMR Awareness Week (18-24 November) calls for action against the global threat of antimicrobial resistance (AMR). This year’s theme, “Educate. Advocate. Act now,” highlights the urgent need to raise awareness, drive bold commitments, and inspire action.

Aurum Institute Ghana is proud to lead the AMR response, supported by the Fleming Fund. Through grants like CG1a and the ongoing Transition Grant, we have strengthened AMR surveillance, renovated and equipped 11 sentinel laboratories, trained staff, and built critical governance frameworks.

AMR is a global challenge requiring collective effort. Join us in advocating for stronger systems to end AMR and create a healthier future.

As we continue to celebrate Pharmacy Month, the potential for innovation in health care is vast and holds the promise of revolutionising the way we prevent, diagnose and treat diseases. With advancements in technology, data analytics and interdisciplinary collaborations, the healthcare industry is poised to undergo significant transformation in the coming years.

Aurum Ghana had the privilege of participating in the 82nd FIP World Congress of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, held in Cape Town from 1 to 4 September 2024, where Nana Kofi Quakyi, Acting Country Director of Aurum Ghana, was one of the featured speakers.

The event provided an excellent opportunity to connect with visionary leaders from the FIP World Congress and our esteemed partner, Pelebox. Pelebox's smart lockers enable patients to collect their repeat chronic medication in under two minutes, avoiding the long queues at public clinics. This social innovation leverages technology to improve service delivery and offers a truly patient-centred experience.
