DNA for all!!
Ever wondered what really happens when a DNA test is done?
After sitting down with the Dr Kyeremeh, the CEO of MMALABS, I was blown away by the precision and science behind it all. Here’s what you need to know:
HOW DNA TESTING WORKS
DNA testing starts with the collection of a sample – this could be:
- Buccal swab (from inside the cheek – the most common and painless)
- Hair strands (with roots. Ignore the ones you see in movies where they pick any hair for DNA testing)
- Nail clippings
- Bl--d of the person
- Even prenatal samples (non-invasive, using the mother's blood during pregnancy)
Once collected, the lab extracts the DNA and compares specific markers between the child and the alleged parent. If enough markers match, the probability of paternity (or maternity) can go as high as 99.99%.
TYPES OF DNA TESTS & WHY PEOPLE TAKE THEM
1. Personal/Peace of Mind Tests
Just want to know the truth privately? This is confidential and for your own records.
2. Legal DNA Tests
Required in court cases involving child custody, child support, or inheritance disputes. These need strict ID verification and chain of custody procedures.
3. Prenatal DNA Testing
Done during pregnancy to determine paternity safely – without harming the baby or mother.
4. Immigration DNA Testing
Sometimes required by embassies to prove biological relationships for visa or citizenship applications.
5. Forensic DNA Testing
Used in crime investigations – to identify suspects, victims, or even resolve cold cases.
WHY IT MATTERS
DNA doesn’t lie. It brings clarity to deeply emotional, legal, and even life-changing decisions. Whether it’s peace of mind or justice, knowing the truth can help families move forward.
