Here are some scientific studies and evidence that support the notion that excessive drinking can lead to kidney problems:

Studies
1. *"Water Intoxication and Hyponatremia in Endurance Sports"* (2019)

Published in the New England Journal of Medicine, this study found that excessive water intake during endurance sports can lead to hyponatremia (low sodium levels in the blood), which can cause kidney damage.

Source: Hew-Butler et al. (2019). Water Intoxication and Hyponatremia in Endurance Sports. New England Journal of Medicine, 381(10), 952-961.

2. *"The Effects of Excessive Water Intake on Kidney Function in Healthy Adults"* (2018)

This study, published in the European Journal of Nutrition, found that excessive water intake (2.5 liters per day) can lead to decreased kidney function and increased urine production in healthy adults.

Source: Spigt et al. (2018). The Effects of Excessive Water Intake on Kidney Function in Healthy Adults. European Journal of Nutrition, 57(3), 531-539.

3. *"Acute Water Intoxication in a Healthy Young Adult"* (2017)

This case report, published in the Journal of Medical Case Reports, describes a healthy young adult who developed acute water intoxication and subsequent kidney damage after drinking excessive amounts of water during a marathon.

Source: Lee et al. (2017). Acute Water Intoxication in a Healthy Young Adult. Journal of Medical Case Reports, 11(1), 1-4.

Mechanisms
1. *Overload on the Kidneys*: Excessive water intake can put a strain on the kidneys, leading to fatigue and damage.
2. *Dilutional Hyponatremia*: Excessive water intake can lead to dilutional hyponatremia, a condition where the sodium levels in the blood become diluted, leading to kidney damage.
3. *Increased Urine Production*: Excessive water intake can lead to increased urine production, which can put a strain on the kidneys and lead to damage.

Recommendations
1. *Drink Water in Moderation*: Drink water in moderation, aiming for 8-10 cups (64-80 ounces) per day.
2. *Listen to Your Body*: Listen to your body's thirst signals and drink when you feel thirsty.
3. *Monitor Your Urine Output*: Monitor your urine output and color to ensure you are not overhydrating.

Remember, it's essential to drink water responsibly and listen to your body's needs to avoid kidney problems.
