Shai Osudoku District Hospital Shai-Osudoku District Hospital (SODH) was established in 1970 as a health post by the people of Shai (Se) and handed over to the Ministry of Health.

The facility advanced to a Health Centre in 1985 and finally to a district hospital in mid-2009.

In line with activities marking the 2025 World Prematurity Awareness Month, Shai-Osudoku District Hospital acknowledges the significant contribution of IH and Project HOPE to the capacity-building efforts of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. As part of the celebration, the two institutions conducted a comprehensive CPAP training session for NICU staff, aimed at strengthening the management of respiratory complications among preterm infants.

The training covered practical application, updated clinical protocols and hands-on demonstrations designed to improve clinical competence and enhance the quality of neonatal care. This intervention is expected to positively impact outcomes for preterm babies within the facility.

Shai-Osudoku District Hospital expresses its appreciation to IH and Project HOPE for their continued collaboration and commitment to advancing neonatal health. Their support remains an essential component of the hospital’s efforts to deliver high-quality, evidence-based care to preterm newborns.

Shai-Osudoku District Hospital acknowledges with deep appreciation the visit by Jay Foundation18 as part of the 2025 World Prematurity Awareness Month activities. The Foundation joined the hospital to celebrate with the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and to support ongoing efforts to improve the care of preterm infants.

During the visit, Jay Foundation presented a range of essential medical and neonatal care items, including baby cots, pulse oximeters, penguin suction devices, cot sheets, baby wipes, KMC sets, HB check equipment, baby dresses and socks, and a boiler. These donations will significantly enhance the quality of care provided to newborns in the unit.

The hospital expresses its sincere gratitude to Jay Foundation for their continued commitment to maternal and newborn health and looks forward to future collaborations aimed at improving outcomes for preterm babies in the district.

The Shai-Osudoku District Hospital, in collaboration with OmniBSIC Ghana marked the climax of Prematurity Awareness Month with a heartwarming celebration across the Dodowa Market and the hospital premises. The event brought together parents of preterm babies and their beautifully grown “preemie graduates,” highlighting hope, resilience, and the power of quality neonatal care.

OmniBSIC Bank generously donated essential medical equipment toward the rebranding and planned adoption of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), reaffirming their commitment to improving newborn health.

As part of Purple Month themed “Equitable Care for Every Preterm Baby”, the Executive Director of Obaapa Foundation, Nana Hemaa Adwoa Awindor, together with her team and partners including the Founder Dr. Selina Bentoom and the Royal Patron Nene Teye Kwasi Agyemang made a significant donation to support the NICU and Theatre of the facility.

The donation included boxes of gloves, tissues, drips, detergents, and other essential supplies.
Hospital core management, NICU staff, and other team members were present to receive the items. The Director expressed profound gratitude to the donors and encouraged others to support the cause. NICU staff also shared their appreciation, noting that the contributions will greatly enhance their work.

The team toured the NICU, interacting with staff and mothers. They commended the unit for its dedication, competence, cleanliness, and compassionate care delivered to babies and their families.

Shai-Osudoku District Hospital climaxed its month-long Breast Cancer Awareness with a mass breast cancer screening, blood donation exercise, and a cooking competition among women at the Dodowa Market on 30th October 2025. This was in partnership with MYO Global, an all-inclusive, international, and non-profit organisation that helps to shape and build the desired future through shared responsibility. The program was under the theme “Buu o forfor,” which means “respect your breast.”

The event saw the participation of the Regional Minister of Greater Accra, who is also the MP for Shai-Osudoku, Hon. Linda Obenewaa Akweley Ocloo, as well as the DCE, Hon. Ignatious Godfred Dordoe, and the staff of Shai-Osudoku District Health Directorate. In her remarks, the Honourable Minister encouraged all the women in the market to take the screening programmes seriously and emphasised the importance of early detection, which saves lives.

Following the Minister’s address, Madam Janet Baidoo, a breast cancer survivor, shared her experience from diagnosis through treatment. She encouraged those present to take advantage of the screening, spoke against the stigmatisation of people living with breast cancer, and highlighted the need for support from families, communities, and the government.

The Acting Medical Superintendent of the Shai-Osudoku District Hospital, Dr Alexander Adjei, spoke about the importance of continuous medical advocacy and community screening to help detect non-communicable diseases before they become symptomatic. He encouraged the community to partner with the Hospital on this campaign and thanked all the stakeholders for making this programme a success.

As part of the Regional Health Directorate, GHS efforts to improve healthcare delivery and promote continuous quality improvement across facilities, the Shai Osudoku District Hospital, Dodowa welcomed the Regional team of assessors for this year’s Peer Review exercise.

This holistic assessment was conducted by staff from Ashiaman Municipal Hospital. During their rounds, the team conducted a comprehensive evaluation of the hospital’s clinical and administrative systems following the thematic areas outlined by the checklist. The exercise aimed at evaluating performance, sharing best practices, and strengthening systems for improved service delivery.

Dr. Alexander Adjei (Ag. Med. Supritendent) on behalf of management and staff welcomed the delegation from the region.

Throughout the visit, the peer review team commended SODH, Dodowa for its dedication to quality healthcare, professional teamwork, and efforts in maintaining a clean, and serene environment.

The Regional Supervisor and Coordinator on behalf of the Regional Health Director praised the hospital for its incredible consistency over the years, commending the staff for maintaining high standards and keeping to the culture of excellence.

Kudos to all staff and particularly those who dedicated countless efforts towards making this a successful story in the history of SODH.
