KATH Oral Health Team Marks World Oral Health Day at Kumasi Central Prisons

The Oral Health Directorate of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) joined the global celebration of “World Oral Health Day” with the organisation of a special sensitisation and screening exercise for inmates at the Kumasi Central Prisons.
The team, led by Dr. Isaac Akotoye, provided free oral health education, demonstrations, and screenings to the inmates.
In an address, Dr Akotoye emphasised the importance of medical outreach especially to places where oral healthcare services were unavailable or inadequate.
“Improving oral health in such environments is crucial because good oral hygiene contributes significantly to overall well-being,” he said.
Irene Owusu, a Physician Assistant at the Oral Health Directorate of KATH, led the public lecture and practical demonstrations on proper brushing techniques, the dangers of poor oral hygiene, and preventive measures against common dental problems.
Speaking on behalf of the prison authorities, Spt. Stephen Kuma, Administrator of the Prisons Health Centre, commended the KATH team for their gesture and appealed for more support from individuals and organisations.
“The prisons health centre lacks a dentist and several critical services and equipment. We therefore call on benevolent individuals and institutions to come to our aid in providing comprehensive healthcare for inmates,” he stated.
Corporal Emmanuel Boateng Agyenfra, a member of the Ashanti Regional Prisons Public Relations team, linked the donation and outreach to the Think 360 Degrees initiative launched by the Ghana Prisons Service last year.
“The initiative focuses on the holistic welfare of both staff and inmates, and activities such as this oral health programme align perfectly with its goals of improving living conditions and promoting rehabilitation within the prison system”, he disclosed.
The inmates who participated expressed appreciation for the screening, describing it as timely and beneficial.
The gesture by the Oral Health Directorate of KATH forms part of broader efforts to extend quality healthcare to underserved populations, including those in correctional facilities in line with the activities lined up to mark the 70th anniversary celebration of the hospital.

KATH receives two life-saving incubators and monetary support from Frimpong-Manso Institute
The president of the Frimpong-Manso Institute (FMI), Rev. Paul Prof. Frimpong-Manso, has donated two incubators and a cash of Twenty-thousand Ghana Cedis (Ghc20,000.00) to the Mother Baby Unit (MBU) of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) as part of his adoption of the unit. This was in addition to funding the painting of the block housing the MBU, Paediatric Intensive Care and the Maternity units of the hospital.
The presentation, which coincided with his birthday, was expected to improve the equipment stock and the procurement of critically needed medical consumables needed for the specialized care of pre-term and critically ill newborn babies at the hospital.
In an address, Rev. Prof. Frimpong-Manso, who is a former General Superintendent of the Assemblies of God, Ghana, stated that the donation formed part of the institute’s humanitarian initiative dubbed “Mission of Hope,” which represented a 10-year commitment to support and renovate the Children’s Ward of the hospital.
He recounted that he was born at KATH as a pre-term baby himself and it was by the grace of God and the quality of care he received at the hospital which helped him to survive and grow to contribute to the development of the country.
“In fact I spent so much time at this hospital as a pre-term baby that I was called Yaw Gee and it is in acknowledgement of this that I am prepared to serve as the Ambassador of the Mother and Baby Unit so as to advocate for more support and resources to improve this facility,” he submitted.
The Chief Executive, Dr. (Med.) Paa Kwesi Baidoo, expressed his profound appreciation for the generous support, describing it as a timely intervention that will significantly strengthen specialized neonatal care at the hospital.
“KATH continues to receive a high number of neonatal referrals from across the middle and northern belts of the country, making such support crucial in improving survival outcomes for newborns who require specialized care”, he noted.

Construction work on the Cardiac Interventional Centre at KATH under MahamaCares progresses

The drive to strengthen specialist cardiac services at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) is gaining momentum following the steady progress being made on the construction of the Catheterization Laboratory (CATHLAB) and Cardiac Interventional Centre currently ongoing at the hospital under the Ghana Medical Trust Fund (GMTF).
Barely a month after work commenced on the project, work on the foundation of the three-storey building is almost completed to allow for the commencement of the construction of the super structure.
This was revealed during a special visit paid to the project site by Madam Obuobia Darko Opoku, the Administrator of the GMTF, also known as MahamaCares, to inspect the progress of work.
Madam Obuobia and her team accompanied by members of the management of the hospital were briefed and taken round the site by the Project Engineer, Mr. Abraham Kofi Boateng Fiscian, who noted that the original design envisaged for the project was a one-storey structure. He, however, pointed out that following extensive consultations with the hospital and its specialist doctors, it has been expanded to a three-storey building.
Mr. Fiscian observed that this strategic expansion reflects a forward-looking approach to infrastructure development which would ensure that the space was optimized and efficiently utilized to meet growing demand for advanced cardiac services.
He said technical meetings have been instituted to ensure regular engagements between the project engineers and that of KATH to ensure the seamless ex*****on of the project.
Madam Obuobia expressed her satisfaction with the pace and quality of work observed on site, noting that the project is advancing in line with agreed timelines.
She was also very happy about the coordinated planning and collaboration between KATH and the contractor stressing that this was going to help deliver a facility which is fit for purpose upon completion.
Mr. Fred Effah- Yeboah, Director of Administration, together with some management of KATH who received the delegation on behalf of the Chief Executive Officer, Dr. (Med) Paa Kwesi Baidoo, appreciated the commitment from the leadership of MahamaCares and reaffirmed the hospital’s steadfast commitment to the successful completion of the project.
Once operational, the facility is expected to significantly enhance KATH’s capacity to deliver advanced cardiac diagnostic and interventional services, reduce referrals, and further solidify the hospital’s role as a leading centre for sub-specialist care in Ghana and beyond.
