The Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) is set to undergo a transformative journey under the leadership of its Chief Executive Officer, Dr. (Med) Paa Kwesi Baidoo.
In inspiring address delivered at the hospitals 2025 Mid-Year Performance Review Conference held in Kumasi today which was his maiden one, Dr. Baidoo outlined a bold vision to reposition KATH as a leading tertiary hospital that โwill not only meets but exceeds the expectations of its clientsโ.
The event, attended by the Ashanti Regional Director of Ghana Health Service, Dr. Fred Adomako-Boateng accompanied by some management team members, along with KATH directors, heads of units, and members of the press, marked a crucial moment for the 70-year-old institution as it charts a path toward becoming a true center of excellence.
โMy vision is to transform KATH] into a true centre of excellence where staff members sacrifices and innovations are duly recognized and rewarded, stakeholders support are acknowledged and valued, and services to clients are life-changing, cost-effective, and compassionate,โhe declared.
The CEO highlighted critical challenges facing the hospital, including outdated or non-functional equipment such as C.T. scans, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRIs), and oxygen plants, as well as the absence of vital facilities like a Catheterisation Laboratory (CATHLAB) and mammogram.
He also noted stalled infrastructure projects, such as the Sickle Cell and Blood Centre and the modernization of the old โGeeโ blocks, alongside staff concerns over welfare packages as some of the key issues he would tackle.
Dr. Baidoo pledged to address these issues through strategic partnerships and aggressive resource mobilization stressing โ I will put in every effort to improve the situation.
He cited his ongoing engagements with key institutions like the Bank of Ghana, Ministry of Health, Ghana National Petroleum Authority, Ghana Gas Company and the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) as a prove of his determination to seek external support to address some of the challenges facing the hospital.
Dr. (Med) Baidoo hinted that his engagements have begun to receive positive responses with the Ministry of Health already committing to the procurement of a CATHLAB for the hospital and other sister institutions to enhance the delivery of specialist cardiac care in the country.
The CEO also disclosed that as part of the efforts to finetune the operations of the hospital, new policies, including a Pharmacy Residency Training and Opioids use guidelines as well as the revision of Staff Disciplinary Code, were being drafted to improve operational efficiency and staff conduct.
On staff welfare, he stated that allowances for Head of Directorates and Units have been increased by 100 percent to demonstrate the commitment of his administration to motivate key staff for improved performance.
The conference which reviewed the hospitalโs performance for the first half of 2025, revealed a mixed but promising picture. Specialist OPD attendance reached 143,858, surpassing the target for the period by five percent. Radiology services outperformed expectations by 10 percent with the conduct of 137,848 cases. Surgeries rose 9,193 cases representing a seven-percentage increase while total institutional deaths decreased by 13 percent. However, areas like emergency admissions, laboratory services, and deliveries fell short of targets, signaling areas for improvement.
Dr. Baidoo emphasized a collaborative approach in improving hospital operations and the quality of specialist services.
The task ahead is arduous, but with your active support and prayers, we can reposition KATH to meet the expectations of all stakeholdersโ, he pointed out.
He also paid tribute to the outgoing Director of Nursing and Midwifery Service, Georgina Afua Sam (PhD), who is set to retire later in the month, commending her for her dedication to improving the quality of nursing and midwifery care at the hospital.
Dr. Fred Adomako-Boateng, the Ashanti Regional Director of Ghana Health Service, in a brief address, commended KATHโs leadership in the delivery of specialist clinical care in the region and beyond.
He pledged the readiness of the regional health directorate to partner KATH to improve healthcare outcomes in the country.
