The Joy of Giving
If you never take time to understand the principle of giving, you will continue to perceive it as a burden, something to be avoided at all cost.
Every time I listen to a sermon touching on giving, the minister has to start by apologizing or giving a disclaimer that they dont intend to exploit the audience. Now, this sorry situation is understandable because people have been shown dust by exploitative “pastors”. But still, this does not change certain truths about giving.
1. Giving is one of the things that can bring fulfillment to your life. In fact, it s a form of self-care, and I strongly encourage my clients to do it, specifically those with whom we reach at peak of therapy. Because once you deal with your traumas, the next thing you need to do is uphold selfcare. Beyond that, many of the happiest people we have in society are selfless givers.
2. Giving can give your life meaning, a reason to show up to it every day. You can have a lot of money and still be miserable. Same as a good job, a family, property, and so on. But when you continually and voluntarily give, you become a blessing to people. A good starting point would be to ask yourself what you will be remembered for, your legacy when you leave this world.
3. For the believers, giving is a kingdom principle, by which what you have is multiplied. Similarly, it is a form of worship to God. I wont expand more on this, for I believe there are people who can do it better.
What if I dont have anything to give? No one who is alive and healthy has nothing to give. You can give virtually anything. Time, energy, skill, money, attention, etc. As long as you give cheerfully and your motive is right, it will pour back to you.
How about those who manipulate and exploit you? Well, that is not the kind of giving we are talking about here. In fact, it is not giving, it is exploitation and manipulation. That one you should never fall for it.
Again, giving is one of the best things you can ever do, for other people and for yourself.
