BMCH, SZRECC, and NEHP Jointly Commemorate World Sight Day 2025.

On Thursday, 9th October 2025 Bundung Maternal and Child Hospital (BMCH), in collaboration with the Sheikh Zayed Regional Eye Care Center (SZRECC) and the National Eye Health Programme (NEHP), joined the rest of the world in commemorating World Sight Day 2025 under the theme “Love Your Eyes.”

The event, held at the BMCH premises, brought together community members, healthcare professionals and partner institutions to promote awareness on the importance of eye health. The commemoration featured free eye screenings for the public, with several individuals booked for free eye surgeries to be conducted at the BMCH Eye Unit.

Speaking during the event, Dr. M.T. Nyassi, Director of Health Services, highlighted the need for sustained collaboration and public engagement to strengthen national eye care services. Dr. Mamady Cham, Chief Executive Officer of BMCH, commended the partnership between BMCH, SZRECC, and NEHP, noting that such collaborations are essential in ensuring equitable access to quality eye care across the country.

Dr. Ceesay, CEO of SZRECC, and Hon. Sulayman Jammeh, National Assembly Member for Bundung, both emphasized the importance of preventive eye health and community outreach. The Programme Manager of NEHP echoed similar sentiments, reaffirming the government’s commitment to improving eye health and reducing avoidable blindness in The Gambia.

Network Against Gender-Based Violence, Partners Conduct Monitoring Visit at BMCH One Stop Center.

On Monday 29th September 2025 The Network Against Gender-Based Violence (NGBV), in collaboration with development partners including the United Nations System and Civil Society Organizations, on Monday conducted a joint monitoring visit at the Bundung Maternal and Child Hospital (BMCH) One Stop Center. The visit was aimed at assessing the center’s operations and the quality of services available to survivors of gender-based violence (GBV).

During the engagement, the Chief Executive Officer of BMCH Dr. Mamady Cham presented statistical records of GBV cases handled between 2022 and 2024, shedding light on the magnitude of the issue. He also outlined key challenges faced in delivering comprehensive support services and discussed possible interventions to strengthen response mechanisms.

As part of the engagement, Dr. Stephanie Awa Mendy, the GBV focal person, delivered a presentation on the clinical management of GBV survivors, underscoring the importance of timely and coordinated care.

Stakeholders reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing collaboration in order to ensure survivors of GBV continue to receive timely and quality care.

Bundung Maternal and Child Hospital Records First-Ever Eye Surgeries.

Bundung Maternal and Child Hospital has achieved a major milestone with the successful completion of its first eye surgeries since the facility’s establishment. The procedures conducted this week, included three cataract surgeries and one pterygium surgery for the first of it kind at the hospital.

While the hospital’s primary mandate is maternal and child health, management says the expansion into eye care reflects a broader commitment to public health priorities, including the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). CEO Cham noted that eye health is critical to achieving Goal 3: Good Health and Well-being.

The hospital management credited the breakthrough to a coordinated effort involving several institutions and individuals. Among those recognized were CEO Dr. Mamady Cham, the National Eye Health Programme, Sheikh Zayed Eye Hospital, and Senior Consultant Ophthalmologist Dr. Winston Ceesay.

This is a bold step beyond our traditional boundaries, Dr. Cham said, adding that the hospital intends to build on the achievement by offering more specialized services in the future.

BMCH Welcomes Cuban Ambassador 🇨🇺🇬🇲

On Tuesday, 23rd July 2025, the Cuban Ambassador to The Gambia Her Excellency Carmelina Ramírez Rodríguez, accompanied by the Acting Head of the Cuban Medical Brigade, conducted an official visit to Bundung Maternal and Child Hospital (BMCH).

The delegation was received by the Chief Executive Officer of BMCH, Dr. Mamady Cham, who expressed appreciation for the visit and acknowledged its importance in strengthening bilateral relations between the Republic of The Gambia and the Republic of Cuba.

During the visit, the Ambassador commended the hospital for the quality and commitment of services delivered to the community. She noted her satisfaction with the operational standards of BMCH and the professionalism of the staff.
In his remarks, Dr. Cham described the visit as a testament to the longstanding cooperation between The Gambia and Cuba, especially in the area of healthcare delivery. He further highlighted the Cuban Medical Brigade’s continued and invaluable contribution to the Gambian health sector, which has played a pivotal role in addressing critical service needs over the years.

The visit concluded with a brief tour of key service areas within the hospital, allowing the delegation to interact with staff and observe ongoing operations.

FULL-TIME UPDATE: BMCH vs KGH. Saturday, 19th July 2025 @ QCity Stadium.

In a thrilling friendly showdown, Kanifing General Hospital (KGH) came out on top with a 5-2 win over Bundung Maternal and Child Hospital (BMCH).

BMCH showed heart and hustle on the pitch, but KGH capitalized on their chances and took control in the second half.

Both teams were cheered on in absentia by their respective CEOs, whose support and encouragement were felt loud and clear by the players on the ground.

This game comes right after our recent celebrated win over EFSTH, and although we didn't take home the win this time, the team remains strong and determined.
