DAY 1 HIGHLIGHTS: LRRPHOA CONVERGENCE IN SOMA DISTRICT HOSPITAL

The Lower River Region Public Health Officers Association (LRRPHOA) kicked off its much-anticipated convergence in grand style at the Soma District Hospital!

Day 1 was packed with impactful and engaging activities:
1. The day began with a vibrant match pass from Soma Market to Soma District Hospital, setting the tone for the event.
2. A formal opening ceremony was held, graced by key dignitaries including the Chief of Jarra West, Deputy Governor, representatives from the Police Commissioner’s Office, WHO Surveillance Officer, NHIS Regional Officer, respected community elders, SAPEH students, the Regional Health Directorate staff, and a lively performance by the Tahir Scout Band.
3. A successful birth registration exercise was conducted to support access to essential services for children.
4. Community sensitization on the importance of vaccination was carried out, particularly targeting hard-to-reach areas within the Soma District Hospital catchment.
5. A live radio health talk show emphasized the vital role of vaccination in disease prevention and child health.
6. The Regional Health Directorate presented key data on public health services, sparking insightful discussions.
7. The day wrapped up on a fun note with a thrilling 5-a-side football match between bachelor and married menβ€”promoting unity and wellness among health staff and community members.

A great start to a 3 days dedicated to improving health and community engagement in the Lower River Region!

ACTIVITIES CONDUCTED
Community sensitizations were centered on the following areas: upcoming nOPV campaign, upcoming SMC and the Mpox. These topics were also communicated to care givers during the pre-clinic health talks at Soma base, Jabisa, Karantaba and Pakalinding.
UPCOMING nOPV CAMPAIGN: During the sensitization session, the communities were informed that The Gambia last had a positive case on polio in 1981. However, during the environmental survey; polio virus was extracted from the sample collected. This precipitated the upcoming campaign. The isolation of the polio is an indication of the presence of polio virus in the country. However, the ministry cannot specifically identify the individual harboring the virus. Thus the need for the nOPV campaign is paramount for the prevention and protection of the general population.
UPCOMING SMC CAMPAING: The communities were also informed about SMC that will start by the end of this month. SMC is an effective and important health intervention that prevents children from Malaria. Malaria is a disease that affects children in the Gambia as a result the National Malaria Control Program initiated the seasonal Malaria Chemoprevention as an
THE MPOX: Communities were sensitized about the emerging Mpox currently ravaging the African continent, during the sensitization the communities were informed about what is Mpox, it’s signs and symptoms, what to do when individuals manifests signs and symptoms of Mpox for early case detection and management and How to prevent the spread of the Mpox in community.
PROVISION OF STANDARD CASE DEFINATION OF MPOX: The provision of standard case definition of Mpox at the OPD, IPD and strategic locations within the hospital is important of early case detection, reporting, intervention and increase awareness about the disease.

Today, 4th September,2024, the District Public health Officers of Kwinella health centre seized the space of NEMA RCH Clinic and sensitized the caregivers in attendance on mPOX and nOPV campaign that is expected in a couple of weeks.

The Traditional Communicators who were trained on SBCC Thematic Areas equally used the RCH Clinic space and sensitized the caregivers on the SBCC Thematic Areas via compose of the key recommended behavioral messages in a musical song.
