This page grew out of my interest in approaching Marcus Aurelius’ Stoic philosophy by looking first at his life and character. We know more about Marcus than any other Stoic because he was a Roman Emperor. Several historical accounts of his reign survive, as do numerous private letters between him and Fronto, his Latin rhetoric tutor, which give us an insight into the true character of the man.
Interest in Stoicism has been resurgent in recent years. One reason for this is the success of cognitive therapy, which was inspired by Stoic philosophy. They share many techniques and concepts and the huge volumes of scientific evidence now supporting the efficacy of cognitive psychotherapy arguably lend indirect support to the value of Stoicism’s psychological strategies and techniques.
However, what really guarantees the enduring popularity of Stoicism is the beauty of the surviving writings and the profundity of the philosophical doctrines they contain. Seneca was one of the finest writers of antiquity but Marcus Aurelius was also a remarkably compelling writer in his own way. His aphorisms were probably never intended for publication but nevertheless have transformed the lives of many modern readers.
On this page you’ll find many resources to help you appreciate the Stoic philosophy of Marcus Aurelius more deeply and to apply Stoicism to your own daily life.
