Extended Reality Learning Framework for Pediatric Nursing Students PeDXR is co-funded by the Erasmus+ Programme of the European Union.

It brings together four Higher Education nursing institutions, an NGO in the field of pediatric nurse care and an experienced IT provider to collaborate on the co-design, development, implementation, and validation of a learning framework (the PeDXR learning framework), for the use of extended reality technologies, in pediatric nursing education in Higher Education, as well as the development and piloting of an Extended Reality Application

✨ PeDXR in Action!

Technology is no longer the future of healthcare — it’s the present. From digital patient records to immersive simulations, today’s nurses must confidently and critically integrate technology into everyday practice.

To bring these developments closer to students, Campus Lier Thomas More organised a Next Level Nursing Inspiration Day for nursing students from first to final year. The programme combined keynote sessions in the morning with interactive workshops and an experiential innovation fair in the afternoon — creating the perfect balance between reflection and hands-on learning.

At the innovation fair, Katrin De Winter showcased the PeDXR project and invited students to explore preliminary Extended Reality (XR) scenarios. These immersive experiences showcased how XR can support clinical reasoning, strengthen communication skills, and enhance patient safety awareness in nursing education.

Students described the experience as both valuable and enjoyable — proving that when innovation is meaningfully embedded in education, it truly enhances engagement and prepares future nurses for an evolving healthcare landscape.

In this PeDXR Extended Reality paediatric nursing scenario, student nurses demonstrate the nasal suctioning technique step by step while envisioning educating parents for managing bronchiolitis at home.

Learners practice:
• Correct infant positioning and saline use
• Gentle, safe suction technique
• Post-suction hygiene

This immersive XR experience allows student nurses to refine clinical technique.

With PeDXR Extended Reality Application, learners step into a realistic XR scenario focused on one of the most critical skills in paediatric care: educating parents and caregivers🎓.

👃 In this XR simulation, you are the pediatric nurse who will guide Maria, the mother of 6-month-old Alex, through safe and effective nasal suctioning at home for moderate nasal congestion, related to mild bronchiolitis. From professional introductions and patient identification to hygiene instructions, every discussion reinforces empathy, safety, and clear communication💬.

This scenario highlights the importance of instructing, guiding, and empowering parents, a core competency in pediatric nursing that directly impacts outcomes beyond the clinic. 🏋️

In this XR simulation, you are the pediatric nurse caring for a 9-year-old boy admitted after a bicycle accident. Following a Glasgow Coma Scale assessment, you’re tasked with preparing and inserting a peripheral IV Catheter— from choosing the right pain relief to maintaining sterile technique. 🩹💉

Through extended reality, PEDXR allows nursing students to practice complex paediatric procedures safely, build confidence, and refine clinical decision-making in realistic hospital settings.

✨ What an inspiring day!

Marianna Moore and Joanna Pieri, representing Τμήμα Νοσηλευτικής - Τεχνολογικού Πανεπιστημίου Κύπρου PeDXR team, had the opportunity to present PeDXR to Prof. Ludmiła Marcinowicz and Prof. Małgorzata Zujko from Medical University of Bialystok.

It was a pleasure connecting with passionate educators and showcasing the potential of PeDXR in advancing pediatric nursing education. Together, we’re reimagining what learning can be through Extended Reality Applications (ERA PeDXR)!

A big thank-you to CUTing Edge and its amazing team members Antrea Papadopoulou and Chris Aristotelous for their invaluable IT support and for providing the VR equipment that made this experience possible!
