Some of the greatest spiritual growth we have is when we are in pain, and we choose to say "Glory to God in all things."

Pain is a hole blasted through the wall of our heart, and when we pray this we we say "hurry Christ, the way is open, come in!"

Thus, the Cross and our crosses are our salvation, our path to union with Christ.

“Afflictions suffered for the Lord’s sake are more precious to Him than every vow and sacrifice; and the odor of their sweat surpasses every fragrance.”

St Isaac the Syrian (Ascetical Homilies)

It's absolutely key that in order to "stop" sins and habits it always requires replacement. You sin because you need Christ in your heart, you won't stop any other way than inviting Him there. You go back to old habits because they are habits, so to "stop" means you need new habits. You must always have something positive to move towards, not away from the negative, as St Porphyrios says.

I'm often encouraging my clients to war against sin because of the beautiful more than because of sin. Fight anger not because "you are a bad/mean person" but because you want to become beautiful and help others become beautiful too. Fight lust because sexuality, intimacy, and romance are beautiful and you want to live them well. Fight gluttony with fasting so you appreciate even the simplest of foods.

You cannot help yourself or others with a focus on the negative. Other people must know they are loved before you correct them, so they see the correction as being from love. At the core of all things must be the beauty of the Logos in all things.
