We need to do better, Guatemala.

Last night I went to the hospital with a client in labor only to be told that the policy changed about 30 hours prior to our arrival and doulas are no longer allowed into the hospital. My client had chosen to give birth at because they have been welcoming to doulas and more supportive of natural birth processes compared to other private hospitals in Guatemala City. But no longer. A surge in COVID cases has caused them to change their policy. Doulas are not considered essential. Only one immediate family member allowed and that’s it.
I sat in the waiting room through the night (because this weekend we are on total lockdown and I needed to wait for a letter from the doctor to get me through the police checkpoints in order to get home). As morning came I watched people stroll in through the doors of the hospital — security guards, receptionists, doctors, nurses, janitors — all essential to the care of the mothers giving birth. As a US-trained labor and delivery nurse I knew that if I had been entering that hospital as one of the hospital’s nurse I would have been deemed essential. But wearing my doula hat I was no longer essential.
As I sat there infuriated that my client was not getting the care that she had so much desired, I realized that we can’t just blame COVID on depriving women of adequate support during labor and birth.
Did you know that in public hospitals in Guatemala City the situation is much worse? Long before this pandemic women giving birth in the public hospitals in Guatemala City have NOT been allowed even ONE support person with them — not even a father, grandmother, sister, friend or partner. Every woman must give birth alone ... but not alone, rather in a room full of other women laboring, and struggling through their own labor. No privacy and no support. It doesn’t matter if it’s your first baby and you’re 14 years old — you give birth in the presence of strangers.
Doulas are essential. And we can’t blame COVID for depriving women of quality and respectful care.

🎼 We lift up our eyes
We lift up our eyes
You’re the giver of life

Levantamos nuestros ojos
Levantamos nuestros ojos
Eres el Dador de la vida 🎵

Gracias a esta preciosa nena por hacerme levantar los ojos!

Thank you baby girl for making me lift up my eyes! 💕

[Repost from the amazing mama ]. This time last year I was not sure how I’d be able to survive breastfeeding for 6 months. Over a year later, we are still going and we love it! (Seriously shout out to .with.love for your incredible video coaching and sweet encouragement through my tears as I pumped 25ml that first day home!)

A turning point came several months ago when she started exploring my face. One of the sweetest moments was when she discovered my eyelashes. She touched them w her tiny fingers and as I rapidly fluttered them (think butterfly 🦋 kisses 😘) she could stop giggling (still latched! 😲)! It was such a beautiful moment. I no longer saw breastfeeding as a job or doing it as a sacrificial act of love (though it is certainly both!), but it became something I really enjoy as we share these fun, sweet moments. To this day, she still loves to explore my face. 🤣

The first thing my 5-year-old son says to me when he wakes up this morning: “I have to go wake Baby Jesus” (the name just stuck after using my class demo doll when we acted out the Nativity Story last month).
Then he says: “oh! He’s hungry!” And runs to get what I thought would be some kind of bottle, but turns out to be a breast instead. I have done something right! 🎉

Now when he starts helping the baby get a wide open gape to improve milk transfer my work will be complete.

Son — you make my heart soar with the tenderness and care that you show to little ones. 💗 You have prayed for a baby to join our family since you were 2 and I know that God hears your prayers. I don’t yet know how God will answer that prayer, but I know that He answers our prayers in ways that are far better than we can imagine, because He gave us you!

I love that shared our story of inducing lactation! 💗 I consider it my greatest accomplishment in life to have exclusively breastfed my son who I adopted at birth, and I would have never dreamed that it would have been possible if someone hadn’t told me about it! So please share our story.
Inducing lactation is possible and so, so worth it!

Woah!!!! When I posted to see if anyone had a Harmony hand pump that they could give to support our lactation work with the moms and babes living in the Basurero in Guatemala City 🇬🇹
I had no idea that so many would give so generously!!
Within a week I was sent over 18 pumps — 12 of them brand new!! 😲
AND a bunch of other accessories and supplies!
Amazed. Thankful. Encouraged. Blessed.
Everything made it to Guate. Ready to do the work!

Do you have one of these that you could DONATE?

I’m working with some amazing mamas in Zone 3 of Guatemala City (the community that surrounds the garbage dump). They are working hard to feed their babies, but these would really help some of the mamas that are especially struggling! 🤱🏽💕

Will be collecting these in San Francisco/Bay Area NEXT WEEK! Please let me know if you have one in great condition that you want to donate.

⭐️Si vives in Guate y puedes donar uno por favor mándame mensaje. ¡Gracias!
