Techs4Cancers will organise public seminars in a hybrid mode, featuring leading experts in breast cancer, breast cancer patients and support groups, medical service providers, insurance corporates and other related organisations to share knowledge of breast cancer.

New and emerging technologies related to breast cancer -Screening

S.3 Name and purpose: Optical Breast Imaging (OBI) for breast cancer screening

Administration: Imaging

Mechanism: OBI measures the absorption and scattering of near-infrared light through the breast tissue. Cancerous tissues have different light absorption and scattering properties than healthy tissues due to changes in blood volume, oxygen saturation, and water content [8]. OBI can detect changes in tissue density, blood flow, and metabolism that suggest cancer growth.

Strengths and Weaknesses: OBI has several advantages over other breast imaging techniques, such as mammography, ultrasound, and MRI. It is ionizing radiation-free, less expensive, and can detect small tumors in dense breasts. However, OBI has lower sensitivity and specificity than other methods and cannot replace biopsy for a definitive diagnosis.

R&D status: OBI is not yet widely available for clinical use but is currently under-going clinical trials and further development. The US FDA has approved some OBI devices for investigational use in clinical trials.

New and emerging technologies related to breast cancer -Screening

S.2 Name and purpose: liquid biopsy for breast cancer screening

Administration: blood test

Mechanism: liquid biopsy involves the analysis of cancer biomarkers that are shed from tumors into the bloodstream. CTCs, DNA, and proteins are isolated from the blood sample and then analyzed using various techniques to determine their presence and quantity [7]. This method can also be used to monitor the effectiveness of cancer treatments.

Strengths and Weaknesses: The strengths of liquid biopsy compared to other methods include the minimally invasive nature of the procedure, its ability to detect early-stage cancer, and the ability to monitor response to treatment. However, it is more expensive and not as widely available as other cancer screening methods like mammography or colonoscopy.

R&D Status: Liquid biopsies are not yet approved as a routine screening method for cancer but are undergoing significant research and development. This technology is currently used in clinical trials and has shown promising results for the early detection and monitoring of several types of cancer, including breast cancer. However, regulatory approval is still needed before it can be widely implemented in clinical practice.

New and emerging technologies related to breast cancer -Screening

S.1 Name and purpose: Abbreviated breast MRI (fast breast MRI) for breast cancer
screening

Administration: Imaging

Mechanism: MRI uses radio waves and a strong magnetic field to produce detailed images of breast tissue. Unlike mammography, MRI does not involve ionizing radiation exposure. The abbreviated breast MRI focuses on the breast tissue and is performed without the use of a contrast agent, which can reduce the overall time and cost of the exam. MRI is particularly useful in detecting breast cancers in dense breast tissue and in younger women.

Strengths and Weaknesses: Abbreviated breast MRI is more sensitive than mammography in detecting breast cancer in women with dense breast tissue or at high risk for breast cancer [5]. However, MRI is more costly and time-consuming than mammography and may lead to more false positives. MRI is also not suitable for women with certain types of implants or pacemakers.

Regulatory approval: The abbreviated breast MRI was approved by the FDA in 2018. Its use has increased in recent years as a screening tool for women with dense breast tissue or at high risk for breast cancer, but insurance coverage for this exam varies by state and insurance provider [6]. Ongoing research is exploring ways to optimize the exam for certain populations and to better understand its overall impact on breast cancer screening and diagnosis.
