Ageing is conventionally viewed as a wear-and-tear process, leading to the accumulation of damage in our cells and organs, which eventually results in illness and death. However, Professor Peter Lidsky put forward an alternative theory: that aging is an evolutionary programme designed to protect our species from the spread of infections.

Tiago earned his PhD in Statistics and Systems Biology at the University of Oxford (UK) before transitioning to human stem-cell research at Rockefeller University (NYC, USA) and The Francis Crick Institute (London, UK).

His research focuses on ๐˜€๐˜†๐—ป๐˜๐—ต๐—ฒ๐˜๐—ถ๐—ฐ ๐—ต๐˜‚๐—บ๐—ฎ๐—ป ๐˜๐—ถ๐˜€๐˜€๐˜‚๐—ฒ ๐—ฑ๐—ฒ๐˜€๐—ถ๐—ด๐—ป, combining stem cell biology with microfluidics, computer vision, and bioengineering. The Rito Lab aims to build next-generation stem-cellโ€“based models of the human trunk that integrate multiple germ layers to mimic early organogenesis โ€” with the ultimate goal of advancing our understanding of human development and disease.

๐Ÿš€ Our SBMS Summer Internship Programme was a tremendous success! Over 80 BBiomedSc and BSc (Bioinformatics) students gained invaluable hands-on experience through unique work opportunities in research laboratories across the Faculty, at overseas institutions such as the University of Cambridge, or in industry settings including the Queen Mary Hospital and Beijing Genomics Institute. ๐Ÿ”ฌ๐ŸŒ

The programme wrapped up with a poster session where students showcased their findings, celebrated achievements, and connected with the academic community. ๐ŸŽ“๐Ÿ† Congrats to all participantsโ€”what a fantastic summer of growth and discovery!
