Only when it suits them. If you feed your cat every day at precisely 7:00 AM, you are very soon going to find your cat underfoot and crying for attention at 6:45 AM. Who needs an alarm clock when you have a cat squawking in your ear?

Cats also know when you’re coming home. There they are when you turn the key to your front door, tail up and delighted to see you. It’s feeding time again!

Whatever you do, don't be late. Otherwise, they will greet you with their paws on their hips, eyes narrowed, lips turned down with the look that says: ‘’Where have you been? And where’s my dinner!?’’

Cats are the ultimate sun worshippers! That’s because they are descended from desert animals. Their wild ancestors liked to bask all day in the sun. For our cats, the call of the wild sometimes means feeling the sun on their lovely, glossy fur as their irises close to mere slits.

This attraction to the sun can sometimes get them into trouble. Cats have died because of their desire to find a warm and cosy spot. They've snuggled up to warm car engines on cold nights or snuck into clothes dryers to bury themselves in a warm pile of clothes. With very unfortunate results, when the car or the dryer is restarted…

Sadly, these kinds of accidents are not uncommon. Fortunately, they are super easy to prevent. Keep the dryer door closed and check inside before you turn it on. The same applies to your car. Honk the horn before you start it, to scatter any cat that may be sleeping in or under the engine.

There is no easy formula for cats. Some people use a “one year equals four” formula, calculating that a 20-year-old cat is equivalent to an 80-year-old person. The problem is that a one-year-old cat is surprisingly the equivalent, in terms of mental and physical maturity, of a human 15-year-old. But using this formula would mean that a 15-year-old cat is like a 150-year-old person. Clearly, that formula is not going to work!

A better method is to count the first year of a cat's life as being comparable to the time a human reaches the early stage of adulthood. Like a human adolescent, a one-year-old cat seems fairly grown up and is physically capable of becoming a parent but lacks emotional maturity.

The second year of a cat's life takes it to the first stages of full adulthood in humans. A two-year-old cat is roughly equivalent to a person in their mid 20s. From there, the “four equals one” rule works pretty well. A cat aged three is still young, comparable to a person of 29.
A six-year-old cat is similar to a 41-year-old person in the throes of middle age. A 12-year-old cat is comparable to a 65-year-old person and has earned the right to slow down a little.

Of course, it’s all relative. Some cats live riskier lives than others. For example, feral cats, those poor, flea-ridden creatures wandering the streets looking for anywhere food can be scrounged. They are lucky to live more than a year or two, before being claimed by accident, predation or disease. Domesticated cats who are allowed to roam are also more likely to meet with an early demise. Cats protected indoors, with regular veterinary care and good and balanced nutrition, can easily live fifteen to twenty years.

The winner is… cats. Cats can hear nearly three times more frequencies than humans. For the technically minded, cats hearing stops at 80 kHz, dogs at 45 kHz, and humans at a pathetic 20 kHz. Cats can rotate their ears and focus each ear independently, they can also hear well from all directions.

A cat's hearing is so sensitive that some will leave the room when a TV or radio is on too loudly for their comfort. And don't even think of starting the vacuum cleaner!

if you think this means that your cat can hear you perfectly well when you call them, you’re absolutely right. When they ignore you, it’s always on purpose ;-)

Historically, humans mostly lived in balance with nature, enjoying this relationship as far as the late 18th century, the beginning of industrial revolution. That changed the way we think and live today. We attach great importance to knowledge and technological progress that we “believe” that we have outsmarted nature.

Unfortunately, nothing could be further from the truth. Many humble voices (including EQUALS) are trying to raise attention regarding the devastating environmental issues. Most leaders are aware of it, but nothing seem to move the trend backwards.

At EQUALS we believe that everyone has a responsibility and can help with change. Change implies that there is something more than just knowledge, something that seems to have its own intelligence and energy to bring order in our disordered world.

Perhaps a strange example and yet… Home cooking is one of the oldest and most nature-friendly ways to prepare the food. Also, to shop locally and buy local ingredients. That’s how we can really improve the balance and reverse the vicious cycle that the pet food industry imposes on us. Avoiding global supply chains, where tins and dry food literally travel several thousands of kilometres.

Sometimes it feels that we can’t personally make a difference. That your contribution is just too small to change anything. It’s just not true. The effect of you doing the right thing will inevitably be felt by you as well as those around you. Most importantly, by sometimes cooking for your cat (or dog) they will feel much better both physically and mentally.
