Swipe through these delicious moments from my recent India trip🇮🇳 But as I savored each bite, it got me reflecting on how we grew up in a volume-driven culture, where food was all about abundance and finishing every last morsel. From family gatherings to daily meals, the mantra was “eat more, be strong!”
Now, as a mom to 6-year-old twins and a child nutritionist, I see how this mindset trickles down to our little ones. We start solids at 6 months and immediately push the “finish the plate” routine—begging, bribing, or distracting with TV. But in doing so, we’re missing the deeper magic of food: how it nourishes their growing bodies, how it makes them feel energized or full, what truly suits their unique tummy, and building a genuine, joyful relationship with eating. Instead of just “finish and move on,” imagine teaching them to tune into their hunger cues, savor flavors, and connect with food as fuel for fun and connection.
The point? Let’s raise intuitive eaters!
When our kids grow up, they’ll head out to restaurants or face tempting junk food, but because they’re in tune with their bodies, they’ll enjoy mindfully, control portions naturally, and stay balanced—without the guilt or overindulgence we often battle. In a world where 1 in 10 obese children globally could be from India by 2030 (and 54% of kids already picky eaters per 2018 studies), this is our chance for prevention over cure.
