THE BASICS:

First, let's tackle the basics of weight loss. The human body follows the Laws of Thermodynamics, also referred to as energy balance. Energy is expressed in calories – the calories we burn through exercise, other movements, digestion, and metabolism (table below) and the calories contained in food and beverages.

Weight loss occurs when there's a calorie deficit – that is, the calories you take in are fewer than the calories you expend. The body then mobilizes its calorie stores from adipose tissue, glycogen stores, and lean body mass to fuel all metabolic processes to keep you alive.

By definition, a plateau occurs when calorie expenditure equals intake over time. In other words, the calories you consume equal the calories you burn, and the deficit no longer exists, thereby negating the body's need to pull calories from its stores.

When most people think of exercise, they typically think of hitting the indoor gym. While that may seem like the only practical option during the cold, snowy winter months, or during the blistering heat of summer, there is overwhelming evidence that exercising outdoors, otherwise referred to as green exercise, is better for you - both physically and mentally.

Nearly two-thirds of adults (63%) in England were classed as being overweight (a body mass index of over 25) or obese (a BMI of over 30) in 2015.

In England, the proportion who were categorised as obese increased from 13.2% of men in 1993 to 26.9% in 2015 and from 16.4% of women in 1993 to 26.8% in 2015. The rate of increase has slowed down since 2001, although the trend is still upwards.

The prevalence of obesity is similar among men and women, but men are more likely to be overweight.
