Your blood sugar swings might be part of the story. When glucose rides a rollercoaster, follicles get stressed, fibers weaken, and pigment cells tire out. Genes matter—but your daily habits do too.

Breaking news: while writing this, I confirmed my dad eats like a toddler—so these swaps are for ages 2–82.

Why swap these snacks? What’s inside that backfires:

Raisins → concentrated sugar + sticky texture that clings to teeth → blood-sugar spikes + cavity risk.

Digestive biscuits → refined flour, added sugar, palm/veg oils, emulsifiers → low fiber/protein, fast crash.

Cheerios / sugary cereals → refined grains, added sugar, flavorings; vitamins are fortified back in but don’t stop the spike → trains a sweet palate.

Saltines → white flour, refined oils, lots of sodium, almost no fiber/protein → fills bellies, not bodies.

The ripple effects:

Ultra-sweet/salty foods reset taste buds, making real food taste “meh”, making picky eating worse

Some emulsifiers/additives can irritate the gut lining, disrupting digestion, immunity and mood

Low fiber/protein = poor fullness cues, so kids (and dads) keep snacking.

Over time, a high ultra-processed diet is linked with weight gain, dental issues, and metabolic problems.
