Reflecting on an Inspiring Session: Managing an Aging and Age-Diverse Workforce 🌟

What an incredible journey we embarked on during our recent session on "Managing an Aging and Age-Diverse Workforce"! With over 20 passionate professionals joining us on 25 March, the event was a testament to the power of collective learning and growth. 🌍👥✨

Our speaker, Julian Pfrombeck, Assistant Professor at CUHK and Head of the Lifelong Learning Lab, guided us through the complexities and opportunities presented by demographic trends affecting workplaces worldwide, including here in Hong Kong. 📊🌏 Throughout the session, we delved into the challenges posed by skilled labor shortages and intergenerational conflicts, along with strategies for retaining invaluable institutional knowledge and the immense potential of leveraging the complementary strengths of younger and older employees. 💡👶👴

Julian's research and practical advice provided us with a roadmap to navigate these challenges and harness the benefits of an age-diverse workforce. 🛤️✨ A heartfelt thank you to Julian for his enlightening sharing and to everyone who participated. Your enthusiasm and contributions made this session a memorable and impactful experience. 🙏👏 We look forward to continuing this journey together, exploring new ways to foster learning, growth, and enhanced performance in our workplace. 🚀📈

Quoting Julian's acronym: Let us open the GATE to rethink and reflect on Generations, Age, Tenure, & Experience in the workplace! 😉

Stay tuned for more events that inspire and empower! 🌟💪

𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝 𝐌𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡 𝐃𝐚𝐲 (𝟏𝟎 𝐎𝐜𝐭 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟒) – 𝐃𝐞𝐜𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤 𝐢𝐬 𝐠𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡!

Globally, organisations 𝐥𝐨𝐬𝐞 𝟐𝟎𝟎 𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐝𝐚𝐲𝐬 and 𝘂𝗽 𝘁𝗼 𝟭𝟲.𝟴 𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗨𝗦 𝗱𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗿𝘀 each year from employee mental health challenges due to healthcare costs, presenteeism (being physically present but not psychologically engaged), absenteeism, reduced productivity, etc., says a recent review on mental health at work The common mental health challenges at work include mood and anxiety disorders and post-traumatic stress disorders from workplace accidents and injuries. It is estimated that on average, 1 in 6 employees had a mental health issue across the globe. In Hong Kong, opportunities for employees to seek professional advice when they are in the edge of mental health issues are limited.

Therefore, on this very special day, we call for individual employees to pay attention to self- and other-directed kindness and compassion – to often check in with yourself and your colleagues if they are doing fine. For management, leadership, and policy makers, it is important to regularly evaluate not just physical, but also psychosocial risks at work, i.e., factors that could cause psychological harm to employees. “Decent work is good for mental health”. Let’s work together to create a psychological safe and rewarding work environment for ourselves, and for the workforce. 🤝
