Parents know first.

Parents and caregivers witness far more feeds than we ever will.
When they repeatedly describe feeding as stressful, overwhelming, or “not right,” that information is not just emotion — it is clinical data.

Persistent parent concern, reports of feeding dominating the day, or a growing sense that something has changed should never be dismissed.

The feeding story is evidence.
Listen. Document. Act.

When parent observations are integrated with clinical findings, our reasoning becomes stronger — and more relevant to the family’s lived experience.

In infant feeding, parents and caregivers see far more feeds than we ever will. Their observations are not “just feelings” – they are a key part of the clinical picture.

Parent reports can tell us about:
• The pattern over time – what feeding is like across the day, not just in one session.
• Change – when feeds have become harder, longer, more stressful or less efficient than before.
• Impact on family life – how much time, energy and worry feeding is taking, and how it shapes the family’s day.
• A sense that “something is not right” – even when we have not yet seen the full picture in our own observations.

When we treat parent reports as data and integrate them with our own clinical findings, our assessment and reasoning become stronger and more relevant to the family.

In our live, online Infant Feeding Course, we look at infant feeding and swallowing within a broader clinical framework that includes typical vs atypical patterns, early red flags, clinical evaluation and the family experience.

Infant feeding red flags: oral-sensory responses & aversion

When feeding feels threatening instead of safe, infants communicate that experience through their behavior.

Strong distress with gentle oral input, recurring refusal patterns, or feeding that is consistently linked to high emotional intensity are not simply “fussiness.” They may reflect underlying sensory, medical, oral-motor, or coordination challenges.

Aversion is often protective.
It can develop when feeding has repeatedly felt uncomfortable, overwhelming, or stressful.

These signs do not provide a diagnosis on their own — but persistent aversive responses should prompt closer observation, documentation, and deeper clinical reasoning.

Looking beyond behavior helps us better understand what the infant may be communicating.

Understanding oral-sensory responses and feeding aversion

Feeding aversion is often described as “fussy feeding,” but the reality is usually more complex.

Feeding is a full sensory experience — taste, texture, temperature, flow, touch, and internal body signals all shape how an infant experiences each feed.

When feeding has repeatedly felt uncomfortable, stressful, or overwhelming, avoidance can become a protective response — not a behavioural problem.

It is also important to distinguish between short, developmentally typical phases of fussiness and persistent, intense rejection patterns that may signal something deeper.

Feeding aversion can mask underlying medical, oral-motor, respiratory, or coordination challenges — and it can place significant emotional strain on families.

💗 For our little Valentines

The smallest hearts often need the most thoughtful care.

Every day, we support infants as they learn to feed, regulate, and feel safe in their bodies.

This Valentine’s Day is a reminder of why careful observation, gentle support, and strong clinical foundations matter — for our little Valentines and the families who trust us.

✨ We share more about infant feeding and swallowing in our live online course this March

Infant feeding red flags: posture & positioning

Posture and positioning are not just about comfort or preference.

When an infant’s body position makes feeding harder instead of easier, it can affect coordination, breathing, and overall feeding safety.

Difficulty finding a stable position, persistent extension or arching, or clear links between posture and changes in breathing or feeding performance are important signals to notice.

These patterns don’t provide a diagnosis on their own — but they are meaningful red flags that should be documented, monitored, and integrated into your wider feeding and developmental assessment.

Looking beyond “they just need better positioning” helps support safer, more responsive feeding decisions.
