🌀 Calm is not a vacation, it’s a skill.

Regulation doesn’t happen in isolation - it happens in connection.
When we feel safe, when we feel seen, our whole system starts to exhale.

This post is a quiet invitation.
To notice what your body is carrying.
To remember that calm is a capacity - not a luxury.
And to know that it can be practiced, nurtured, and reclaimed.

Spirals

Spiralling. Sometimes life feels like it’s on an upward spiral and sometimes it feels like it’s on a downward spiral.

In fact, I would say that sometimes nothing changes in the external world, yet our perception, mood or state of mind takes us either up or down.

And I can swap between these 2 states multiple times….even in one day!

The practise is to learn to keep re-centring our state, gain perspective and to train ourselves not to engage in the mental downward spiral.

We all do at times…we all fall down the rabbit hole.

The key is to develop enough self awareness so that when you catch yourself spiralling you can bring yourself back to the present with loving kindness.

Warning: Self flagellation only makes the downward spiral more intense!

Self awareness is a practise (and one we need to cultivate) in order to be free from the deception of the mental spiral. With support and understanding we can learn to snap ourselves out of these negative feeling states.

Paying gentle, kind attention to how we actually feel illuminates our capacity to deal with our emotions.

Sometimes we may distract or push down our feelings because we don’t know how to handle them.

This is common…particularly in a society where we have been told to “man up” or “just get on with it.”

Maybe try this posture with your hands on your heart and focus your attention on your natural breath cycle for a couple of minutes….see what happens.

It’s funny how we take our car to the garage at the first sign of trouble or our pet to the vet if we think there is something amiss…but how often do you pay attention to your desires, wants and needs?

Establishing a simple practise of taking a few quiet moments for yourself every day is one way to create space in your life.

When we create space, we get perspective.

When we get perspective we can begin to understand our behaviour, what triggers us and why we do the things we do.

Without space we are stuck on the hamster wheel of repetitive behaviours that don't always serve us.

I often use the analogy of the hamster wheel! But does your life feel like groundhog day sometimes?

Cultivating a sense of ease does not come from controlling your environment or making sure you have enough wealth, holidays or the right job.

Ease isn’t something you have to ‘wait for’ until the external conditions are right.

Ease comes from your state of mind, your ability to recognize your state of mind and your ability to accept it and then change it.

This is what I teach.

The mind tells us all sorts of stories and we get stuck in believing it is telling us the truth.

But you know this isn’t the case if you reflect on the number of times you rationalize yourself into a decision and the next minute you rationalize the complete opposite!

The mind swings and lurches if you don’t learn how to keep it under control through compassionate self awareness.

This is what I teach.

There is another vehicle for recognizing truth and that is the body.
Let’s get into it.
