Description
Mindfulness has gradually become a mainstay in clinical psychology, serving as an essential component in many evidence-based intervention systems. It has been defined as the sustained, non-judgmental attention on the here and now. Yet, due to the decontextualization required for positivistic measurement, the mindfulness of Western psychotherapy is different from that of the historical and culturally-embedded root teachings of the Buddha. In this symposium, various scholars will provide a contemporary summary of the Western clinical conceptualization of mindfulness, a root sutta distinction of two qualities of mindfulness, and a case study to illustrate the difference. Participants will be able to define two qualities of mindfulness and begin to consider implications for practice.
