Anxiety disorders are one of the most prevalent psychiatric disorders, and up to 30% of the population are reported to be affected by an anxiety disorder during their lifetime. The disease burden and economic costs of anxiety disorders are substantial, thus timely, effective treatments for controlling the disease are essential. Although effective therapies against anxiety disorders are available, early identification of patients with the disorder is still clinically challenging.

In the current Feature Story, Dr. Chong King Yee was invited to share her experiences in managing anxiety disorders and discuss certain clinical issues related to psychiatric disorders.

Precision oncology (PO) has shifted cancer treatments away from non-specific cytotoxic treatment to a more individualised manner. Advanced diagnostic technologies, such as next-generation sequencing (NGS), optimises PO by improving the matching between patients and therapies. Nonetheless, there are still practical obstacles, such as accuracy, policy, and cost, hindering the clinical applications of PO approach. Fortunately, emerging techniques, including artificial intelligence (AI), have been implemented to enhance the clinical performance of PO. In the current Feature Story, the technical basis, clinical performance, and future development of PO approach in cancer management will be discussed.

Glaucoma is a progressive optic neuropathy characterised by visual field loss and structural damage to the optic nerve. The disease is a leading cause of irreversible blindness worldwide, affecting about 3.5% of individuals aged between 40 and 80 years. While glaucoma-associated visual field loss may be asymptomatic until the late stages, the disease is commonly known as a silent thief of sight.

In a recent sharing, Dr. Lai Sum Wai Isabel highlighted the pathophysiology of glaucoma and shared her insights into managing the disease.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic, inflammatory, systemic autoimmune disease that initially affects small joints, and gradually involves larger joints with varying degree of severity. Apart from joint damage and bony erosion, pain is a common and often debilitating symptom reported by RA patients.

The aim of this article is to review the pathophysiology of RA-associated pain and to evaluate the clinical performance of current treatment against this phenomenon.

Obesity is a global pandemic with a significant and increasing pathological, psychosocial, and socioeconomic burden. Apart from being a key driver of various metabolic syndromes, including type 2 diabetes (T2D) and hypertension, emerging literature suggesting obesity is associated with the increased risk for the development of a wide range of neurological disorders. In contrast, there are contradictory clinical data advocating the protective effect on cognitive functioning of excess adiposity. Hence, the evidence correlating obesity with cognitive function decline are featured in this issue of V.Pulse.

Time to Accelerate New Products with Sanofi!

Sanofi, a French pharmaceutical company intend to introduce more innovative treatments into the local market as a result of recent government incentives and encouraging steps to accelerate the introduction of breakthrough medications. Last year, Sanofi had achieved to launch 25 innovative products in China, which was two years ahead of the schedule. The aim here is to potentially speed up the release of China’s most innovative medicines as soon as possible, and the Collaboration between China-France will help anchor the local healthcare ecosystem.

Furthermore, these include sunken eyes, gaunt cheeks and saggy skin, which makes users appears older and more deflated, thus term “Ozempic Face.” The devastating effects have been recently highlighted in Hollywood celebrities who are believed to be one of the biggest consumers of the weight loss drug.
